At least one OES engine strike team is enroute as well.

That was quite a bit stronger than yesterday's quake. I'm about 100 miles south of the epicenter. I expect Token felt this one pretty good! Hope all is well up there.

Under 11 miles from the epicenter of the 7.1 when it happened. It was a ride, for sure.

I am pretty OK here, lots of breakage, but the basics are all good. Other people in the area are not in as good a shape.

The Base has ordered an evacuation of all non-mission critical personnel.

We have had 1429 quakes in the last 24 hours (so that does not count the original 4.0 or 6+), 39 of them have been 4.0 or larger, 7 have been 5.0 or larger.

It was a hell of a ride, that I do not want to do again. Finally passed out about 6 am this morning for about three hours. I do want to thank Ridgecrest PD, Kern County Fire, Kern County Sheriff’s and San Bernardino Fire for having un-encrypted radio systems. This event shows once again that open systems gets information out to the public fast and accurate. Some of the stuff that was going around was crazy.

Wife and I slept under the stars in the bed of the truck. Since the big one was at about 2030 local, and there was so much broken glass in the house, and decent sized seismic events were still happening, we decided to not address it until this morning. It was a nice night, the stars were bright, and I had the Uniden BCD536HP right there in back of the truck to monitor things.

While I had all agencies in the scan of the 536, I also had a separate hand held just monitoring RPD CH 1 and CH 2 and CLPD

I stayed inside, got the broken glasses cleaned up, PSR 410 Liberty/Halls/Med 9, PSR 500 RPD, BCD 536HP SBCoFD, 996XT KCFD Kern 1. The three stack has the BC15 KCFD Tone Out, BC15XT Kern 3, 996 Kern 2. Who said you can have too many radios.

I'm in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. All I felt was mild to moderate rolling with both major events. My friends in Trona and Ridgecrest weren't so fortunate.

With all the information coming out of the area, there has been surprisingly little information out of NAWS China Lake. I only saw the base commander at one press conference. Most of the seismic events were within the boundaries of the base and I'm aware of the evacuation order, but I am curious as to the extent of damage to the infrastructure. I'm disappointed the news media has not pushed for more of a response for the Navy.

The media is interested in Drama, which fuels ratings. So, social media submissions showing screaming people running out of a restaurant,
or pool water sloshing up over it's sides, is far more of a Drama sell than damage to China Lake Naval Weapons Station.

I hope all you folks down in SoCal have weathered this okay. My sons were down in the area over the weekend and went for a bit of a ride on one of the aftershocks (7.2 ?) Living in the Bay Area, I met the Loma Prieta quake in '89 first hand. The company I worked for at the time spent months repairing damage from it so I'm no stranger to the havoc an earthquake can wreak.

They are reporting that they are not mission capable at this time. They are still surveying the base facilities at this time. Just had a couple of good aftershocks while posting this.

Until the reports start showing up on the Congressional budget lines, you are unlikely to hear a great deal of detail out of China Lake on this. An occasional short overview of a general status is about all you can expect.

There are a few factors here that account for time lines and the amount of information shared (or not shared) over time.

It is a military base. The general public has little real information on day to day operations or infrastructure. Sure, the big items are covered, the big projects, and the general mission statements. But not much detail beyond that. And the real question is, why should they share with the news media what condition China Lake is in? Unless you work on or are supported by the base how does its status matter to the average news viewer? I am not saying there is no interest, but I bet the number of people who even know that China Lake exists is pretty small as a percentage of viewers. And for sure you are not going to get pictures from the base anything like the post quake booze isle at WallMart/gas station/etc for a sound bite.

The base is extremely spread out. Over 1.1 million acres of mostly remote facilities and operations. It can literally take hours to traverse parts of the base. We are only 98 hours after the very first, smaller, event, and under 64 hours since the big event, and we are still expecting substantial events in the next couple days. Literally over 5200 aftershocks have happened since the start of this sequence. In the last 24 hours we have had 1218 aftershocks, at the peak we were having 1400-1500 events per 24 hours. Things are still happening, and that must be taken into account.

The following is based on listening to China Lake Fire and Police Department frequencies. At this point, days after the events, some areas seem to have still not been even visited by personnel on the ground. Many buildings have not been assessed for structural safety, so personnel cannot enter them to even start assessment. The crews working the assessment are limited in size for safety (and probably security, but they have not been saying that on the radio) reasons. So probably the picture is very incomplete at this point.

And security is absolutely another thing that will keep the news from hearing a great deal out of China Lake. There are signs posted several places around the base, signs that have been there since the base first started. "What you see here, what you do here, what you hear here, when you leave here let it stay here". That about sums things up, however social media has really hurt that attitude. By far the most employees of the facility have not been allowed back yet, quite possibly will not be allowed back this week, and when they are allowed back, because of things like social media and the like, we will start to hear more, even though we should not.

ROCKED the Antelope Valley. I live 60 miles from the 7.1 epicenter, and about 75 from 6.4 epicenter. Felt everything that rocked up there at 4.5 and above. I have video of Thursday's 6.4, and Friday night's 7.1 rocking my truck. Gave a whole new meaning to "Chevy Shake." All of the "fore-shocks" and "aftershocks," that were 4.5 and above, only "wagged my antenna," but felt them, nonetheless.

Very interesting. I had no idea.

Coso Geothermal Field

The Coso Geothermal Field is located within China Lake boundaries. The geothermal power plants located there began generating electricity in 1987[17] and were the Navy's first foray into producing clean power from the earth's thermal energy (heat). Total annual electricity production from the field amounts to 270 megawatts (360,000 hp), equivalent to more than 4 million barrels (640,000 m3) of oil. (One megawatt of electricity meets the needs of approximately 1,400 households.)

Dutchsinse is live streaming updates. The quakes are moving into the Garlock fault which is not good news.

Doom porn.

Yes, the south east end of the swarm has butted up against the Garlock. And yes, there have been aftershocks around and on the Garlock itself. But there is no indication any of them have been part of the Garlock.

Over the years there have been, small, events around the Garlock, but the Garlock itself has not been active, as far as I know, in historic times.

The north west end of the swarm is staring to butt up against the Southern Sierra Fault zone, and that has been more active than Garlock. There is more danger in this swarm triggering events in the Walker Lane than in the Garlock, and that has even larger ramifications than the Garlock, but is not as well known, thus spectacular, as the Garlock.
