I am new to scanning and have the Uniden xlt895 as well as the RS pro-46. In monitoring the 800 mhz band, there are these beeps at the end of each transmission and sometimes during the scanning, I get so many of these beeps channel-to-channel, I have to turn the scanner off out for frustration.

I have seen g/wiz boards that supposedly eliminates this. Is this my only alternative to being able to scan in the 800 mhz range? Are the more recent models designed to eliminate these beeps? If so, what are some models you can recommend? Thanks for any suggestion.

Generally, in the 800 mHz range, you'll need a trunking type scanner. There are several scanner models that WILL properly scan EDACS systems so you won't hear the beeps. It sounds like you are scanning the band in "Search" mode for signals and don't have specific frequencies programmed in to monitor. You will go nuts trying to scan 800 mHz frequencies (in most areas) in the "open" mode. You will hear beeps and buzzes and all sorts of (digital) noises. You will need to determine which frequencies you WANT to monitor and what type(s) of trunked systems a particular service might be using. This info can be found in the RR Database on this website.

Going nuts is right!

Thanks much! You are correct about going nuts - I want to take the scanner and sling it at a wall sometimes! I think I now see the problem. Apparently i need the g/wiz board if the scanner does not trunk track. my pro-46 does not. My bearcat xlt895 does and I have not been using this feature. So I will read up on how to set this up for proper trucnk tracking.

Thanks much for your reply - been pulling my hair out with this and it appears all I have to do is set up my scanner to trcuk track! Thanks again!!!!!!

Your 895 will do EDACS, so figure out what frequencies you need for the system you want to monitor. I program all my scanners manually (including trunked systems), but there are ways to load all the info into your scanner via downloads. There are many guys on here that can help you with this. If you do it manually, just follow the instructions carefully and be sure you enter the EDACS frequencies in proper LCN order. This info can be found in the RR Database.

If your Pro-46 will scan 800 mHz in CONVENTIONAL mode, you can use it there. In my area, the local sheriff uses 3 or 4 frequencies in the 800 range and they are NOT trunked. I just plugged in the frequencies and it works fine in conventional mode.

I STAND CORRECTED.... The 895 only does Motorola trunking systems, so you will have to get one of the EDACS scanners if you want to make the beeps "go away". I do not have any Uniden trunktrackers, so I did not know the 895 lacked EDACS capability. For EDACS monitoring, I am using Radio Shack's Pro-92, Pro-94 and Pro-2052. All do a decent job with my local EDACS system. My favorite of these is the Pro-94.

Yep - you're correct - thanks for the edit (LOL). I checked the manual and there was no mention of EDACS - no poblem. Now I have a valid excuse to invest in a newer scanner. I will look at the Uniden portables. I'm looking at the Uniden 246T (I think thats the right model) due to price. The Digital units are a bit too pricey for me, but I might just bite the bullet and go digital nonetheless. Decisions - Decisions! Thanks again guys!

Warning, only the Pro-92 from RS will do MOTO EDACS, and LTR.
There are various scanners ffrom Uniden that will do all three.
The Pro-96 will NOT do LTR but will Trunk Track 3.6K and 9.6 K baud MOTO P-25 Systems. It will NOT follow along with Pro-Voice or Open Sky neither will any of the Uniden Digital ones.

No scanner will do MPT systems but I believe that there is a computer program that will let you follow along.

Wait a few weeks unil the 396 starts shipping. Then the 296 should come way down in price. (If it doesn't, all you've lost is a few weeks. If you buy a cheaper scanner and the 296 becomes "a cheaper scanner", you'll kick yourself.)

The G/Wiz boards were made before trunking scanners when you had to scan the EDACS systems conventionally. A trunking scanner that supports EDACS makes the G/Wiz board unnecessary.

I went ahead and purchased the Radio Shack pro-97. I entered the freqs for my area and as indicated, no beeps - woot woot! I'm a bit confused on the Trunk Traking but will read read read. Even though I have all of the frequencies entered from the database, I'm not getting as many hits as compared to monitoring the freqs conventionally. There were 19 frequencies listed, and I entered them all in the proper order (via LCN). Could be a distance issue from what I have read.

Thanks much for the help guys!

Don't Forget....

Also, don't forget that for EDACS systems on the PRO-97, you can not use the 00 channel in any particular bank.
So start with channel 01 and keep the frequencies in the LCN order.
The 97 does a great job on EDACS systems.
and... Motorola and LTR for that matter.......

Good choice...
