EDACS Encrypted

Hey. I was talking to a few LPD (Lynchburg, VA) officers and they advised me that there is a Encrypted VICE channel that Lynchburg uses. Obviously, since it's encrypted, I cant hear it. How exactly does an encrypted talkgroup on an EDACS system work? Would I hear the transmissions if i listened to the frequenices using convential mode (not trunking the EDACS freqs)? Just kinda a "just wondering" technical question. (This is a repost of the same question, posted in the Virginia Forum.)

It's called ProVoice, and scanners don't even trunktrack it so you'd never know unless you were in conventional mode (and then you'd just hear digital screech.)

You can encrypt Provoice with DES, you can encrypt Aegis with VGE or DES, however you can encrypt P25 to DES or AES. These are all options for the 7100 portable, I haven't looked up the 700 or the LPE200. But in essence, you take a digital talkgroup and place encryption on top of that so that only the users with the correct encryption keys in their radios can talk, and those without the keys do not hear the conversation.

EDACS Encryption

Spotsylvania Co VA has an EDACS analog system. The Sheriff's Office has one channel encrypted here used for the undercover Narcotics, Street Crimes and Emergency Response Team as needed, Tac 4. You cannot pick up anything when you program it in.

I know all of our officers use LPE200s. So, basically, if i put in the TG that's encrypted, i wont hear anything. Not even digital noise?

You will only hear digital noise. You will have no chance of hearing any voice no matter how you try to listen to it with a scanner.
