• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Howdy all,

I am new to EDACS.. yada yada.. The usual disclaimer

I am ready to yank out my hair when it comes to programming my Orion 800mhz EDACS.

I have figured most of it out, but I have run into a stumbling block. When a Dept has multiple towers (sites), how do you enable the radio to scan across all the sites. I programmed all the frequency sets per site and list my group sets, but its hit or miss for me because I have to program - listen - and see if I picked the right site. If not, start over. What am I doing wrong?

As I recall (and I could be wrong here) you have to make a system, then program in your sites for thes system. As such you may want to program each site in as a separate system and see if you can scan across systems that way. Otherwise, the radio will lock into one site (the strongest signal) and scan for the talk groups in your scan list from that site.

It has been a long time since I have played with EDACS programming, either, so i'm not sure how well scanning across systems works - if at all.

So, if I am understanding you correctly: If say dept A has 4 sites, then I would make 4 systems (system 1, 2, etc..) each with the frequency set of the respective tower, and assign the same group set to all four systems. On one system, enable it to scan the other three? This way if I move out of CC range it will scan for a CC on the other 3? I believe this should work, but it strikes me as a very ineffecient way to program. I have just used 3 additional system asignments just to monitor 1. Or is this just a glitch of MA Coms?

yes each system (tower) must have its own bank, each one with its corisponding LCN's
and have the same TG's for each bank,

You should also bear in mind that if you have the radio programmed not to transmit, and with auto login turned off there is a good possibility that you won't hear any traffic even if there is some.

In EDACS (and pretty much any trunked system) radio channels on a particular tower are only "lit up" if the system "knows" that there is someone out there on that tower listening to it.

There's another interesting point that comes from this - if you are scanning multiple groups, even if you HAVE auto login turned on, only your SELECTED group is logged in on that tower.....

Hope this helps

Id Question

Can You Log In With A Lid Of 99999 Or Would You Have To Use A Lid From Their System That Is Enabled?

Thank You.

99999 is not a valid EDACS LID. The highest you could possibly use is 16382 since 16383 is reserved for system use. Be careful using a LID to auto login, they will know you are there in a hurry weather you use an already issued LID or one not enabled.

You should never use auto login if you are a "receive only" user, logging in is just as bad as keying your radio with transmit. You do not need auto login, also you will hear all transmissions even if you are not logged in. That previous statement about missing transmissions is not true, but it is true for Motorola SmartZone systems.

Actually the highest possible LID is no longer 16382. 16383 is reserved for system use but now with EDACS extended addressing, the highest possble LID is somewhere around 1, 048,000 something or other.
