Has anyone tried using a Uniden scanner in conventional mode to scan EDACS mobile frequencies instead of the tower in trunked mode to listen for units that are close to you?

How were the results?

Was it neccessary to use the attenuator?

Thanks!

Would that work if the system was digital ProVoice? In other words, does an analog transmission emanate from the unit and get converted over to digital at the output tower?

Nope digital is digital from the radio the repeater simply repeats it.

In the case of provoice, wouldnt you still receive something from the mobile unit, although unintelligible? This would at least alert you to the presence of a close-by unit.

Not really....depends on where your antenna is located vs where the vehicle is. The mobil unit could be miles away...but if there's a clear line of sight...you could easily hear it.

I guess in that case the attenuator being enabled or having the squelch turned up a bit would help.
