• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Correct me if I am wrong, but The State of Florida is installing a statewide radio network by MA/COM. This system is EDACS NETWORKED with ESK. It uses ProVoice Digital Voice Exclusively throughout the entire system. All Talkgroups are DES Encrypted. I dont know what anyone else thinks, but I think this is OVERKILL! Not to mention a waste of taxpayer's money. Just an observation....

Well, from what I have heard, the State of Florida System was not actually purchased by Florida, therefore not being a "waste of taxpayers money." Florida is leasing the System, which makes it more cost effective for all, including taxpayers.

Whether you buy or lease it is still taxpayer money.

Why is it overkill?

Most of the costs will be related to coverage and field equipment not features.

Never said it wasn't taxpayer money. :) Just said it was more cost effective. Instead of paying millions of dollars on a statewide system which would have to be paid for at system acceptance. Just lease it over a long period of time, easier on the taxpayer wallet.

An EDACS system with ESK enabled full time, 100% ProVoice Digital communications, and on top of that all talkgroups DES Encrypted? Its way too much. This is like the "You cant even dream of hearing me" system.

I agree. I maintain a system with ProVoice on certain talkgroups. There is a GREAT need for some talk security, but, EVERY group being encrypted is totally un-necessary.

Well the thing is that aren't the TAXPAYERS paying for the lease?

Yes, too much security is OVERKILL. Taxpayers are paying for THE LEASE but CANNOT listen. Democarcy In Action or
DEMOCRCY INACTION?

Thank you, finally someone who understands where I am coming from.

Yeah but since their is NO PRO VOICE SCANNER, the whole system, in a way, is encrypted.

Heck yeah is an overkill! Especially when you realize if their system was going to be a target for terrorists, they'll just blow up all the communication towers for the system and at the same time take out a lot more with it. Much good that system is going to be then, but the taxpayers can't listen to it, so it makes it all worth it!

LOL, back seat drivers! HEHEHEHEHEH

Well I I was going to specify an EDACS system can someone tell me why not to use ESK??

If I have made the OPERATIONAL DECISION to use encryption, can someone here explain why Pro-Voice without is "Good Enough"?
It seems that some people here feel that anything that happens to make a system harder/imposible to scan/monitor is a personal attack on them.

Seems a bit self-centered if you ask me!

Of course it is!

The state is taxexempt so there goes one reason to lease. The lease includes the price of the system plus interest. The interest is probably higher than tax exempt bonds would cost. Macom also gets to use for money making the interstitial frequencies that the state had to apply for as part of the contract. If you add it all up, I doubt if the lease saved the state one penny.

But it does transfer the cost from a capital expense to an opperating expense.

If structured right it can get around limitations on borowing money also.

LOL; It's THEIR system.

You want to make the decisions, get into the business.

I agree, it is their decision. But, leasing a system does save more than buying, just my opinion.

But, the cost of encrypting a whole system? The cost is not effective. Why spend the SERIOUS money to encrypt a whole system, that includes mobiles and portables. Just do the sensitive talk groups.

So if you buy a house versus leasing you save money but when you lease a system versus buying a system, you save money.
Am I missing something here?

Yes!

You are missing that fact that most here don't know the answer.

In general, leasing is more, but sometimes leasing can be less.

Bottom line cost is VERY RARELY the factor that drives the decision between leasing buying in these systems.
