I doubt you will see Tarboro Fire and Police going to Viper anytime soon.

The Town of Tarboro has a dedicated P25 Motorola Digital system.

If I am right the older analog system was replaced when the big hurricane came through and wiped out the entire old system.

I know that Tarboro Fire is still in digital voice mode and still can be monitored.

Tarboro Police is a different story. They are transmitting in digital as well, except everything has gone to encrypted and therefore is unable to be listened to.

Hope this helps

David, you are correct. You can monitor Fire and Public Works on their system but like you stated Police is Encrypted. Fire is also simulcast on Edgecombe Fire VHF.

Who the hell does the Tarboro police think they are? Digital AND Encryption for a 10,000 population town? Unreal.

I would imagine that Tarboro believes it is a municipal government organization that
feels that it knows best how to handle its communications and made decisions
based off this knowledge.

But if you feel you could do a better job at managing their communications here is a link to their website where you can share your radio expertise with them:

Extreme waste of money for a small town like that, as well as putting the average citizen as a disservice.

If you dont think it is utterly ridiculous, I dont know what to tell you.

I thought Wilson was bad, but Tarboro takes the cake.

Not neccessarily, they have been digital for a long time and had the ability to upgrade encrytped, so thats what they did.

I would ask you to please consider the contents of your next few posts
carefully. So far your posts here have brought little positive
discourse and discussion to the table.
We have a "Rants" forum here at RR and you are more than welcome to
use it to your hearts delight to express your displeasure with a particular city/agency.
Here in the NC forum however we prefer positive dialogue & discussion in regards
to the radio hobby.
Thanks for understanding

I think the most simple explanation for this is that this is how the PD wanted it, so that's what they did. As stated, whether they have 10 citizens, or 10,000 citizens has nothing to do with it. A lot of it comes down to officer safety. It's possible they don't want unauthorized "ears" listening in on what they're doing.

i.e. - If they have an armed robbery lets say, at a bank, and the robbers are listening to a scanner and can hear every move its kinda hard for the officers to have the upper hand. While I love listening in on everything, as I know everyone else here does, I will sit that to the side if the powers that be determine it is safer for the general public to not be able to hear law enforcement communications.
