Fairly new to the hobby and trying to find someplace to purchase a new scanner and not having much luck. I've got an older RS PRo-46 and would like to get a neew base unit. I live east of Edmonton but Edmonton would be the closest center to me. Does anyone have any suggestions for dealers in the Edmonton area?

Thanks,

Francis

Dont know about Alberta but in my opinion the best source for Scanners bought in Canada is through Ontario, radioworld.ca and others, RS completely dropped the ball in Canada for selling scanners , however I was told by RS in Vancouver that they would order the Pro-95 for you $500. (not the newer 96 available in the US only) lots of Canadians have done so !, decide what your target listening will be then try to decide what you want to buy (go Digital) all major centres in North America are going that way (have gone!)

Are they insane at Radio Shack Canada? $500 Canadian. At todays rate the Pro 95 , on sale right now in the States for $149.99 = at todays rates about

181.030 CAD
Canada Dollars

Boy, make sure you shop around before you even think of doing something like ordering from the Shack Canada. Order one up your self from:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.a...me=CTLG_008_009_010_003&product_id=20-525

With exchange and postage it will be a heck of a lot cheaper than $500 Radio Shack Canada wants.

Two things..

1. I believe Radioshack.com will only ship to US addresses. Any time I have explored it, it encourages me to use radioshack.ca instead.

2. If you are looking for a scanner you can't get locally, I have had excellent results with National Electronics out of Kansas. http://www.national-electronics.com is their web address. They won't take credit cards from Canadian customers, as I recall, but I've ordered two units from them in the past couple of years with absolutely no problems.

If you are partial to ordering from a local dealer in Edmonton try: www.cbcity.ca. It looks like they haven't updated their page in a while, but give them a phone call since your close, they may be your answer.

If they don't pan out, try www.scannersunlimited.com. These guys are the real deal out of Califonia. They are very competive, professional, and they ship to Canada. In a previous post I read that Edmscan ordered from these guys before and highly recommends them as well.

Regards,
Richster.

I've also ordered from Scanners Unlimited and I was very pleased with their service. Another place you can check out if you want is NTF Communications at www.ntfc.ca.

Jay,

I think that was true at one time but I've heard a few reports of people getting PRO-96's shipped to Canada. I don't have the fine details, but there's someone called Hazel that people should ask to speak to.

RS Canada still looks pretty hopeless...still advertising the BC245 for $499. Maybe being bought by Circuit City might have an effect on this but I'm not holding my breath.

What about buying a PRO-96 on ebay and having it shipped in? I have brought mine to Edmonton and it worked quite well on their trunk system.

Some quick advice, stay away from CB City. You will get an out of date scanner for a lot more than it is worth.
Deal with either Communications Electronics or scannersunlimited and you will not be disappointed. Both are US based web order capable shops and you will get a MUCH better deal than anywhere in Canada.

Ebay is also a good source if you KNOW what you are looking for and what a good price for that product is. You can also get taken for a ride if you don't know this... so stay away from Ebay if you don't know what you are looking for and how much it is worth.

The folks over at www.scanalberta.com may be able to help you too. Good Luck!

Heh... not likely... if you want an update on the whole scanner saga in Alberta, it could take pages. Short version, ScanAlberta team dropped the web site earlier this year, some dude in Lethbridge snapped up the domain name and then "appropriated" even the old site logos. And all of this without mentioning the "change in ownership" or how it had gone down to the unwitting scanner freaks. Anyhow, after SEVERAL failed attempts to start the site up again, they seem to have now abandoned the plan completely and just redirected the domain to a scanner site for lethbridge.

Re: RE: MatteBlack

Uh, what the hell brought this on? Someone needs to grow up? If you look at the date of the post you are quoting above, it was at a time when THERE WAS NO SCANALBERTA site...

And as for the "unwitting scanner freaks" it was a reference to how the scanalberta.com domain ended up being obtained by the new owners of the domain, and that this was at no time disclosed to the people who were using the forums. It is NOT a reference to the people running the site. Please take the time to review the messages you are talking about and read them again with grammar in mind. Scanner freak is not a derogatory term for someone who is freakish about scanners. I AM A SCANNER FREAK. Anyhow, I digress, the new owners at no time disclosed to people asking questions that they were not the people that the previous users of the older scanalberta.com forums were expecting. Are you DEBATING this? This is a fact.

I don't have a problem with the domain changing hands and someone else giving it a go, just the way it was done and never disclosed to people outside of maybe a dozen people who found out how it all went down. And the fact that the logos from the old old Scanalberta site were then "appropriated" by the new owners without permission of the person who created them did not sit well with some.

As for sharing frequencies. There was nobody (at least no active participants) on the older forums from the location that the new forum owners are, therefore the frequencies that may be being shared now are ones that the previous owners did not have access to. At least the people who are in the area where the forum now is run from were not sharing before. Most of the frequencies shared in the older forum were for Edmonton. As this is where the vast majority of the people were posting from. The scanner people from Calgary (with a few notable and noble exceptions), had at times been unwilling to share with the people in Edmonton. At one point there was even a verbal warning given to people posting frequencies and discussions for Edmonton and area on the albertascan Yahoo group that is still in existence to take it off the list! It was all very junior high school at times, and yeah, it was dysfunctional as hell. The old site may still be around if there was ANY sort of contribution of stuff from ANY other place than Edmonton, but there was not. I know the people running the site eventually got fed up with repeatedly being hacked, and nobody else except maybe eight or nine people from Edmonton (including myself) posting. But if you were in the members forums on the old Scanalberta.com site, believe me, you had a crap load of frequencies available to you, and got to see some cutting edge tech at the several meetings held in conference rooms and hotel banquet rooms. At one of the meetings there was an official government of Alberta forestry and sustainable resources frequency (direct from a Conservation Officer) given out to all who attended. Hands on demonstrations of how to use Etrunker and Trunker (which is definitely not my expertise) to decode the City of Edmonton system was very handy.

As for growing up, I heard at one point the suggestion was from people using the new site down there in Lethbridge to put Scanalberta site back up and "not let any of the old people" sign back up again... Yeah, someone needs to grow up.

Speaking personally, I've tried to stay out of the arguments on the Alberta scanner enthusiasts' issues. I have always figured there was a lot of unnecessary friction between people, and couldn't figure out why it was going on.

However, the one thing I will say is, RadioReference serves as a place to share radio information and communications, and is not for this type of bickering.

Please take it elsewhere.
