Some of the scanning community in Edmonton does appear to be a little uptight because of this.

The rumor that I've been seeing is that people are unsure whether a member of the scanner community/clubs provided the information, or if it was gleaned from a 'media radio' (a portable programmed to the specs of the police/fire/EMS/etc agency and issued to media outlets).

Will be very interesting to keep track of!

Oh, and there's this.

---------------
COMPLAINTS FILED

Both The Journal and Edmonton Sun are the subject of an Edmonton police investigation stemming from three separate complaints.

- It is alleged that someone committed a breach of trust by releasing to The Journal transcripts or portions of transcripts of police radio communications.

- Another complaint alleges that a Sun reporter improperly used information obtained by listening to a police scanner. Restrictions on the use of police communication heard over a scanning device are governed by the Radiocommunication Act.

- A third complaint alleges that a Sun employee tipped off a possible drunk driver, which obstructed police in the execution of their duties. Whether or not the person warned was intoxicated is not the issue.

The alleged improper use of information is the basis of the complaint.

Ran with fact box "Complaints Filed", which has been appended to this story.

I'm here a lot
The Edmonton Sun has probably shot themselves in the foot with their
recklessness.
One day they will find that their tips and scoops that they gleaned off their scanners will suddenly disappear,as the Police Service will most likely look to some secure, unmonitorable system.

Enjoy what you have, while you have it. :(

The same can be said for all media services in all parts of the country. With their recklessness, they will all be griping about being shut out of what is going on in the public services in all cities.

Start using your heads Media People, before your sensationalism reporting.

I still think it is most likely a source in the police department itself provided the transcript to the paper, and to hide their source the paper is attributing the transcript to the scanning community. Let's hope there is an unbiased and thorough investigation into all this, and if it was a police source, then the source should be named and appropriate action taken.
