Once you've purchased a copy of the software from your dealer they should help you keep it up to date. Dealers get the software digitally through an online portal. The lifetime software licensing you're talking about is the software in the radio, so for example, if you buy the P25 Trunking option and like 10 years from now you decide to replace that radio, you won't have to purchase that license again. The radio software is a large part of the cost of the radio, so this is a big selling point for the Viking series radios.
