To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

What version firmware, model number, and frequency band is your radio, and what options do you see? You might know this already, but as you use your arrows to navigate around, you will see other options. If you have the manual (which may be downloaded from repeater-builder.com), you will see nested menus in different places.

I also think those menus can be determined by how you have the channels set up. I blocked a bank of dual mode channels off for keypad entry and labeled them FPP 1, FPP 2, etc. Then I had the full access to tone and NAC.

When I get my 5100 together, I will see what options I can find in it. My radio is currently disassembled and in a "things I need to get to" bin in my personal shop. It has some intermittents that no shop I approached wanted to deal with, so instead of tossing the radio as some of them had suggested (it's a version 1 firmware; they must think I'm made of money...), I ordered an infrared bonder which I'm going to use to rework the intermittents, and maybe pick up some side jobs to offset the cost of my new toy. It should be delivered by tomorrow afternoon (16 Jan 2013).

For what it's worth, of the two intermittents, one is an intermittent CTCSS encode/decode which also has an intermittent data transmission issue in P25 mode.

Firmware:4.14.5
Model #-242-5213-610BD4
Band: VHF

I think the issue is more of how the previous owner set up his channels. Some channels won't let me put a PL in, others wont even let me put a TX frequency in. I think I may just have to track down software and a cable, and fix everything.

Is there a way to erase the frequencies in the radio from the keypad so I can start from scratch?

Thanks!

I do not know if he will get any Johnson help at P25.com

I have spend days going thru that site as I under stood it to be for how/why P25 system work.

But I found that it is more a Motorola howto then any thing else. They need to rename it to some thing like """Motorola Radio how to""""

I am not saying that what they have is bad, (actually, lot of good info), it just does not live up to advertisting.

Actually with a company down in Houston selling several hundred EFJ 5100's for the 900 band, TONS of good info has come out on P25.ca! Much of which applies to radios for other bands. And yes it is MOTO-centric but the 5100 forum overall is pretty good!!!!

Thank you to everyone for your responses!

I think at this point it might just be best to get a cable and reprogram the entire radio. There is so much that needs to be changed that it might just be easier to do it through a software.

Thanks again!

Well, I managed to get a copy of the PCC. I have an HT1000 programming cable, is it possible I'm lucky enough that the HT1000 cable will work to program the EFJ5100?

Thanks for everyone's help!

nope. same connector different cable..you need the EFJ specific one
Heh...thought I might be able to get lucky lol....

Another question, is the EFJ PCC picky like the Moto CPS as far as needing an older, slower computer to read/write the radio?

Thank you very much for everyone's help. It's VERY much appreciated!

The software is a little sensitive to real high speec computers. Sort of depends on which version of the software your trying to use. I have seen one of my high speed clock computers not read the radio. Went to a slower version and it read and wrote just fine. My current laptop has a 1.87 GH clock. It will occasionally give me grief and have to go to a slower computer.

As for the programming cable, the connectors sort of look the same betweem the Motorola XTS and the EFJ connector. The pin connections are different.

The PCConfigure programs are a little finicky, but they'll run on XP vintage computers, as well as Windows 7, so you don't need a DOS machine. Oddly, I have one version that will run on W7, but errors out and closes down on XP. I don't know why, but then I have a couple of 'puters accessible to me, so I haven't spent time pondering that. The radios, however, need different versions of PCConfigure and (IMO) EFJ hasn't done a good job at retrocompatibility in their software. So, for X version of radio and firmware, you need a certain PCC version. For Y, you need another. I have a 4.4.31 radio that I would need to flash to a higher firmware revision before any of the programs I have can read it. Frankly, I'm confused - but the people who know me personally would say that's a normal condition.

Either way, make sure the software version you have or are buying is compatible with your 4.14.5.

How do I find out if the PCC is compatible with the 4.14.5 firmware? The software version I believe is 02.10.02
