• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Interested in getting a 5100. What Version do you all suggest so that I do not run into a issue with software or programming. I see alot floating out there but am wary of which radio to get.

Primarily looking for one vhf and one uhf 380-470

Cant really say, because I'm a nx5000 person, however they 're end of life. So, your kind of in a neutral point. Take a chance and win, or loose.

I have 4 5100s and they have been very good radios despite their age. My lowest version is 1.18.15 and the highest is 4.14.5. Finding a CPS was not a problem for either. Mine are a VHF used for storm spotting, a 700-800 MHz used as a scanner for the P25 in our county with transmit disabled, and a pair of 900 MHz as we have a couple of repeaters on that band.

I would try to find a version 6 radio, which can be seen if you have the 6 button curved front, without the buttons separated by much space. They can also show SL in the name.

I've got 40 or so of the government split UHF models…haven't done much with them yet.

The 5100 series can be programmed from the keyboard, even models with limited keyboards (no number pad). If the radio does not have FPP, it is easy to add with the correct software, but cannot be added through the CPS.

I have two 900 MHz ones. I really like them. Both have FPP. I don't use them a lot. I use my VX-7r as my carry radio (analog only radio). The only down side of the 5100, they are kinda heavy (I have the ultra high capacity battery's).

BTW. I'm looking for a good case, one of my radios is pretty rough looking, so that I can re-case it.
