While everywhere is bad today, El Paso is working incidents involving emergency vehicles.

1. Hwy-24 near Calhan AMR has rolled an ambulance a few times.

2. Hancock and Academy in the Springs, CSFD E-11 was hit by a pickup while running emergent and the engine has rolled several times.

Lets keep all emergency workers in our thoughts & prayers today.

Initial word is the pickup blew a red light and E-11 was turning to avoid them.

Wow. Amazing that a pickup could do so much damage to a fire truck. Hopefully they're OK.

Jim, is that a newer rig? It appears to only be a year or two old since it has the clear LED lightbad on the cab.

Firefighters Injured After Fire Truck Rolls
Colorado Springs Accident Involves Second Vehicle

POSTED: 11:55 am MST January 4, 2005

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A fire truck responding to treat a 2-year-old in cardiac arrest collided with a car at a busy intersection in Colorado Springs this morning, seriously injuring at least one firefighter.

Lt. Carl Lyman said the engine company was traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash happened about 10:30 a.m.

The fire truck rolled three to four times, investigators said.

A paramedic riding with the crew reported one firefighter suffered extensive injuries. Ambulances were called for several other firefighters and the person in the car.

Lyman said road conditions were clear at the time of the accident, even though a winter storm is spreading over most of the state.

The exact conditions of those involved were not immediately known.

Officials said the fire truck is a total loss.

Yeah, The engine is actually only 5 months old, we took delevery in August. Better this one then the old E-11 which was a 1988 Pierce open cab. Driver/Engineer, Officer, and Firefighter went to the hospital. Officer and Firefighter were released this afternoon but Driver is going to stay overnight.

I'll keep ya posted as information comes in,
Kevin

Who was the manufacturer for that engine and what chassis is it on? Looks like it held up really good.

Box and Cab were 2004 E-one, not sure of the chassie I'll ask and get back to you. It only rolled once, The Engine was going eastbound responding from a previous call, had the red. The pickup truck was southbound on the green going about 45mph. So engine driver had maximum visability for that direction. They haven't talked to the driver yet to find out if they stopped or not. (Just for reference, the first pictures above was taken looking Southeast and the second was taken looking Northeast, correct me if I'm wrong please.)

Standard procedure for CSFD is to come to Red, yeld in a position where emergency light are visible in all directions, once deemed safe, vehicle may proceed through intersection.

Still haven't herd about the driver, since it's my days off I don't get in the loop to much.

The AMR rig hit some ice and went into a ditch, don't know to much more on that one.

accident update?

being a truck driver myself, and hearing and reading from witness points, it sounds a little to me that possibly the FD may have been at fault in some point. It was reported that the fire truck was traveling at a high rate of speed through the intersection. This could be the reason of the FD rolling after the pick up hit it. It was also said the light was red for the fire truck as it was entering the intersection and assumed it was clear and continued to proceed. As it was in the intersection the pick up was also in the intersection and they both collided. How can the pick up driver be at full fault for this. I believe that the FD should take at least some of the responsibilty. Just my thoughts. Thanks

Ok, an Update.

I was mistaken by saying it was the Driver in the hospital. Driver, Officer, and Firefighter went to the Hospital. Driver and Officer were released later that day, Firefighter stayed overnight with a couple of broken ribs and they were afread of them puncturing the lungs. He is now home and doing well. Still haven't heard about the situation with the driver and stopping, the FD is keeping that real tight right now. Yes the Driver of the pickup has been formally charged with failing to yeld to an emergency vehicle.

The AMR incident:
Paramedic is out of the hospital with broken Collerbone and leg from what I hear 2nd party, Medic also is now questioning if he should continue to be a Paramedic or quit and start doing something else.

Sorry, I don't know to much more. It's all still kind of hush hush.

More to come,
Kevin

More to Come???

If the FD is still being hush hush and the pick up driver was charged, what is there to be hush hush about? Is there more to it than him just being charged? I would think after being charged it would be a closed deal. I just don't agree with the pick up driver taking full blame. It seems to me that the City of Colo Spgs has to always put the blame on others and never wants to take fault in anything. Sorry to vent like this.

Good eye spotting that, Joe! Six months is pretty quick for getting a new engine, but it can be done. I'm told that my new engine will be ordered in a few weeks (mines just old not wrecked) and to expect it in 6 months, but my deputy chief says more like 10. I'm hopiing for 8!

I was told that E21 was already ordered when E11 rolled. I expect this engine to be E11 and a new engine ordered for E21. However, I have been wrong before, this engine could still go anywhere in the city. If I find out for sure I will post the results.

Nope. :(
You'd be surprised (or maybe not) at how many people of questionable driving skills, visual acuity and auditory capability are out there. My captain swears that when I turn on the lights I'm also turning on a "cloaking" device and we become invisible.
