I'm setting my scanner up for new year's. I see lots of emergency management channels, what one do I want to add? I'm in Des Plaines, and am unsure of which channels to add since so there are so many.

Des Plaines EMA is 155.820, other towns have different channels so check the database for them for neighboring agencies. I would not expect them to be particularly active on New Years, they do not normally have operations for them unless they are assisting with some city event like fireworks or a parade.

Since most police activity is digital and encrypted in your area you should probably program in the local fire channels for RED Center and the neighboring towns, they are well covered in the database. Also, be advised that RED Center is switching to P25 sometime next year so you should probably think about getting a digital scanner so you can hear fire traffic when they do.

Yes, according to the database Des Plaines PD is trunked (digital and encrypted on StarCom21). Fire operations are part of RED Center and are analog for now so they can be heard on your BC125AT. Like I said before however RED Center will be going to a P25 conventional system soon so when they do you will need a digital scanner to hear them. The new RED Center fire system will not be trunked or encrypted, just P25 digital on conventional repeaters.

For listening to StarCom21 anywhere in northern Illinois you need an SDS100 (portable) or SDS200 (Desktop/vehicle mounted) due to the simulcast used in the area, no other scanner will handle that properly.

For the upcoming RED Center system any P25 scanner will work, such as the WS1040. I would however suggest the BCD325P2 instead, I find it easier to use and program and it is exactly the same size and design as your BC125AT. It is more expensive but more future-proof, you can use it for Phase 2 right out of the box and (for a fee) add DMR and NXDN down the road if needed. It does not handle simulcast well in many areas, so that is why the SDS100 might be the best choice if you can come up with the money for it. That would allow you to hear all the unencrypted StarCom21 traffic such as the ISP and other agencies that use it.
