A plane landed safely at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport after being struck by lightning this afternoon. The AirTran Flight 63 was headed from Washington-Dulles Airport to Atlanta when it was diverted due to bad weather in Atlanta according to an AirTran spokesperson.

The Boeing 717 plane had 117 passengers on board and the pilot called for an emergency landing in Chattanooga after being hit by lightning during the diversion out of "an abundance of caution", according to the airline spokesperson.

The plane safely landed at 4:13 p.m. and none of the passengers were hurt. They all got off the plane, onto another plane and safely on to their destination, said the spokesperson. He added the plane would be inspected by maintenance before being put back into service.

The plane is considered "Magic 1" but the team was flying on another regularly chartered flight. According to Trish Wingerson with the Orlando Magic, AirTran is a sponsor of the Magic and have branded some of their planes with team logos.

"An abundance of caution" is a considerable understatement. Planes take lightning strikes more frequently than even the crews and passengers ever notice, basically it's a non event. If the inspection turns up a couple of pin holes with a slight blackening around them (entrance and exit wounds) it would be A LOT of damage. (;->) FYI, planes don't get hit by lightning, they just sometimes happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and get in the path of a bolt that would have happened anyway.
