It is cause someone hit their "emergency button" . The dispatcher will sometimes say that they have an emergency packet from a particular person or vehicle.

It is used for Public Services mostly so that if they are in personal danger they can push the button (either on their radio or their computer) and help will be summoned.

It will depend on the agency involved whether someone will actually go and check out the situation. Edmonton Police Service has a policy that states someone must go check on it .. but EMS and EFR generally just have the dispatcher ask the unit over the air if they are ok and then clear the alert.

Hope this helps ..

In this area, 99% of the fire/EMS emergency hits are user error. I imagine the police have a marginally higher rate of 'legitimate' emergencies - at least here. Fire and EMS just confirm with the incident commander that everything is OK. Police have to get a specific response from the member before they can cancel the emergency, and often, others are already en route as soon as they hear it declared.

Here, Fire and EMS drop an emergency alert about once or twice a week. Police do 2 or 3 per day, easily.

It's about the same here. I usually hear at least a couple of false emergency declares a day from EPS. Rarely from fire or EMS. I also have noticed that when police hit the big red button, they ALWAYS follow up. I have seen many occasions of EMS or FIRE emergency declares going completely unmentioned.

Plus it depends on the system admins also. Here our Stadium talkgroups used to cause a false emergency declare packet to go out on the system with EVERY TRANSMISSION! It was god damn annoying...
