Alot of emergency vehicles now have GPS units so dispatch can track them. They use RF to transmit a data signal back to a tower. What frequency does the GPS units generally transmit data on ? I have heard older units work off 855.8375 but not sure if that is still correct.

Your question has too many possible answers.

Check the agency/municipality's licenses in the FCC database. There's probably one that is used for data telemetry, and if you're lucky, the comments might even say GPS data transmission.

The GPS isn't transmitting the data directly, it's being transmitted by a separate radio on a frequency licensed to that particular agency. Could be VHF-Low, VHF-High, 220 Mhz, UHF, 700, 800, 900 or higher. It could even be transmitted via cellular modem.

Many operate off cellular networks, some operate off data networks run by the public safety agencies, and some off private data networks. It is really a mixed bag, but there is no frequency nationwide that is used.

around here most of them use a paid GPS service that goes thru cellular networks. though with the new statewide system going in i hear some agencies will be using it in the future.
