Can the Radio Shack Pro2096 scan an encrypted channel or talk group ?
If so do I need the frequency or can I scan for it when they are talking ?

Thanks

There are PC programs that will unscramble voice inversion scrambling. The catch is, it has to be simple "fixed" inversion, where the inversion frequency doesn't hop around. There are at least two free programs out there that will unscramble it. Speech inversion wouldn't be considered encryption, except maybe if it used a hopping/rolling code system.

Now, AES or DES encryption is another story, and is illegal to listen to decrypted, if you ever get that far.

Fixed voice inversion is very outdated and of no value from a security standpoint. Anyone with knowledge of scanners and radios could break it trivially.

Nonetheless it's still used in some places. It's also built-in to many business/LMR radios, like Icom and Kenwood, so it may be utilized with or without knowing how insecure it is. At any rate, it's just another barrier to prevent casual eavesdropping. It'll stop most of the people who hear it from actually trying to unscramble it.

Maybe people on this website have some knowledge of scanners and radios yet they would never figure out hot to do it
