Thanks

ATTENTION MODERATORS! PLEASE CLOSE THIS THREAD BEFORE THE SELF IMPOSED SCANNER POLICE FLAME THIS POOR GUY!

Now, with that out of the way, you can't legally monitor an encrypted channel, even if you could. I've been down this road and the answer is short and sweet - no.

BTW - The first line it hopefully enough to get the moderators to lock this thread down before some of the "others" on this group start flaming you (and they will!).

He's right, if they don't get this closed there will be a flood of flames. He is also right, there is no way to modify your scanner or decode it on your computer.

Do a quick search of the forums and you can find lots of previous threads (flame wars included) where it is discussed ad naseum.

Are they really encrypted? Does the database on this site show that?

Flame, gosh, people can find this Forum but can't find the answer before asking the same question over and over and over and over. People, please do a search, look, whatever, before just popping a question. FLAME, FLAME.

There are talkgroups encrypted. Look in the Mode column of any trunked system here at RR.com A=Analog, D=Digital, E=No Way No How (or Encrypted).

I am aware of that but the OP sounded like he thought everything was encrypted but wasn't sure. That is why I thought a clarification might be in order before he just threw in the towel.

It ONLY causes a flame war because there are people here who out of ignorance refuse to accept a few simple truths.

Don't worry about it. However, it is not feasible by a hobbyist to decode encryption. This may be one of the "simple truths" my good friend N_Jay commented on. Most scanner listeners wish they could listen to encrypted communications.

Don't let the scanner police fool you. Anybody with a Uniden BCD-396T can decode DES/DES-XL/DES-OFB or AES-256-encryption by typing "2, 9 and hold" upon turning on their 396T. The radio showing an "E" is only a subterfuge. It can be monitored with only 4 keystrokes. Governments spend millions of dollars engineering algorithms to keep things secret, but Uniden has it figured out. Don't tells the NSA, though. They will put Uniden out of business.

I find it humorous (in a sad kind of way) that instead of just giving a straight answer we have to have a discussion on all the foolish answers given in the past.
