Alright, I have been watching some youtube videos lately and I have seen people decoding encrypted channels by using the headphone jack on the scanner plugged into the computer and then the duck talk runs through a voice changer, I am interested in how this is possible. I hope one day we will be able to listen to encrypted channels legally.

It's not encryption they're defeating. Do a search on DSD and MotoTrbo. That's most likely what you're seeing them accomplish.

Your "duck talk" comment makes me think they're decoding voice inversion. And if so, a simple google search will tell you all you need to know.

And DSD and MotoTrbo will decode digital signals, but as far as I know, are incapable of decoding the encryption used with digital modes.

give us a link to one if the videos your referring to and we might be able to explain what's happening.

So when a P-25 Digital Encypted Channel comes in and you hear duck talk, you can use DSD OR Motorobo to clear the duck talk in order to hear them clearly?

No, you aren't going to be decrypting P25 comms anytime soon. The keyspace is simply too huge and there's no (civilian) computing power to make such a thing even remotely possible. IE, don't bother.

Voice inversion however is an entirely different story. It isn't "encryption", it is a very weak form of privacy that really doesn't do much.

The link does not lead to any downloads of relevant software.

ProVoice is just another Digital format like P25, TRBO, or NXDN. It can be decoded with DSD, if it is encrypted DSD will just give you garbled speech.

ProVoice can be encrypted but it is not always encrypted.

There is a difference between "decoding" and "decryption."

One decodes an information protocol to recover the information carried therein. This includes Morse Code, RTTY, FAX, P25, MotoTRBO, ProVoice, etc.

One decrypts information that is concealed by altering its parameters in a way that is intended to prevent unauthorized listeners from understanding it. Such alteration - or encryption - includes DES, voice inversion, Aegis, etc.

That's what I thought I knew it wasn't encrypted, but he said it was illegal. I don't think it is, or somebody would have shut dsd down

True, I guess I should have clarified that only if encrypted would it be illegal. I'm still on my first cup, sorry. :(
