To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.
If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

It all depends on how the radio is configured. It can be configured for user selectable encryption, or it can be configured to be 100% on that channel/talkgroup.
Personally, I think the 100% strapped is safer...no chance of talking in the clear when you thought you were encrypted.

I have to agree with Thunderknight. 100% encryption is safer for communications and officer safety. Some personnel may not have full understanding of encryption and allow communications in the clear, if user selected encryption is implemented.
100% strapped is not in the scanner listener's best interests. So, I like the fact that it can be toggled off.

on the system I care for, all encryption on deployed radios is strapped per TG.

Safer? I have heard agencies turn OFF encryption in the field because they can not hear each other with the encryption On,the radios failed to decode the digital signal.So yes they do sometimes shut the encryption off because theres less data bits to put back together at the other end,and with it OFF they can then communicate.So happy monitoring all.And LEOS,stay safe out there!

Same here. I can't get users to remember to not use the antenna as a handle. No way I could expect them to remember to turn encryption on and off.
Nor is it in the best interest of citizens and open government, with some exceptions.100% strapped is not in the scanner listener's best interests. So, I like the fact that it can be toggled off.
If citizens are not willing to be open with what they do, why would you think the government would ever be?

Yes you can strap the talk group secure. One of the things I've found (with some radios) is that even once the talk group is strapped secure, you will receive a no-permit tone if a secure/clear switch is programmed and not set to secure (and vise versa with clear strapping). There can be a lot of user confusion in that case as well.
A few months ago I had to reprogram one of my service radios as one of my customer's talk group's was tied into another system at the core level which had a 100% secure policy. That is how I discovered the above.
Moral of the story, only techs should be able to have the option to select secure/clear for testing...everyone else should be strapped.
