Entering into a 296D

Sorry for this newbie question: If I am entering analog (I think that is what you call non-truck or 800mhz freqs) into the scanner software that came with the scanner do I just put in the the freq then in the next space to the right put in the name I want to pop up on the scanner when that freq is monitored? I have done digital and 800 trunk and I enter in all the freq then to the far right I put in the talk id groups and then the description, it works fine that way. Just curious how to do it without talk groups, is the way I said above the correct way? Hope you understand what I am trying to say. In addition, what do I set the foloowing steps to?
Trunk- (I assume OFF)
ATT?
Delay (2 sec)
Beep?
Record?
Mode - auto?
Steps - auto?
Tones?

You are correct...just program it up the same way you did it with the talk groups. Type in the frequencies and descriptions and you are good to go. Truck would be off, beep would be off unless you wanted the scanner to beep when it tracks a particular frequency, 2 second delay should be good, att can be off, mode can be auto, and tone would be the CTCSS or DCS PL tones if you know them. I find the included software that comes with the 296D works great for me. Enjoy.

Crash: so in the first block I put the freq, the 2nd block I out the name of the nascar driver I want to match that freq. I dont use the far far right talk group id blocks correct, since it isnt a trunk system? Affirmative, if not a trunked system, just do the frequency and and the description. No need to do anything with the talkgroups.
