I did an experiment with an engineer friend of mine one morning some time ago. It seems that the HED will send burst out every 10 or 15 seconds when trying to find an EOT. Once the HED found a EOT, EOT would then send a burst as noted above. Seems like HED was saying HELLO! ANYBODY OUT THERE?!!! CQ, CQ, CQ!!! :D :D
Glad to hear about EOT setting your brakes for ya. That could have been something we would all be reading about! How long did it take you guys to decide to flip the switch?
Later...

It took longer to climb over the engineer to get to the switch then it did to make up my mind, but it was all in slow mo lol, thankfully that guy that made so many mistakes that day no longer works here.

What caused our prob is that he stoped at the top of the hill with only the engine brakes set, so we had no idea that someone had closed a anglecock on us, and well stack trains dont like to stop anyway on cold shoes lol.

There is a decoder program out there on the web floating around that will decode the raw data bursts for you, I gave it a try last year and it worked like a charm, I think I had it connected to the discrominator tap on my scanner.
Steve
What I am hearing directly over the scanner is wording to the effect of Speed, Number of Axles, Temp, etc.

I assume this is the same information you speak of?

Thanks,

Lyman

Ah, I see. So the EOT is then transmitting other (or additional) data to the Cab?

Thanks again -

Yes it is.... a modern 2 way EOT Transmits if the rear end is:

Moving or stopped ( and direction )
Whether the marker is on or off
Brake Pipe pressure at the rear of the train

And most importantly the engineer has the ability to place the train in emergency from the Rear of the train.

While not a "radio" question, but related to the EOT box, how can it apply brakes in an emergency, when told to?

Doesn't air have to applied to the lines to engage the brakes or is it the otherway around, pressure is let out?

If air must be applied, where does the EOT box get it's air from?

When the trainline is charged with air the brakes will release. When air is released from the headend the brakes will set. When air is exhausted fast enough it will cause an emergency application and every triple valve will dump all of the air in the trainline.

When the signal is given to the EOT opens a valve and releases air quickly enough that an emergency application will be caused.
