My sound card allows me to adjust the playback equalizer settings on each individual audio device. What is the best setting on an 8 step equalizer to optimize live audio playback quality?

In the absence of any room parameters, the starting point for setting an equalizer is the traditional "smiley face," which means raising the lower controls above 0db, lowering the center controls to below 0db, and then setting the topmost controls above 0db, so a "smiley face," -- you get the idea.

Actually, for the most understandable audio, flat from 300-4,200 Hz, and as much cut as you can get above and below that. (Human speech, including differences in sibilants [the difference, say, between 'B' and 'P' or 'F' and 'S'] falls between 300 and 4,200. Everything else is noise.)
