My understanding is that Station 21 (River Valley) will be renovated to bring it up to more modern standards but it won't be a new facility (See page 98 of the Capital budget document). Along with boat ramp upgrades and a new roof the budget covers the cost of a new rescue unit and all equipment.

On a related item, the land that used to be Station 11 (Capilano) will be the site of a new Capilano branch of the public library (page 472)

Both these items are showing as recommended by administration. We will see what happens!

So General Truck is building a new service truck to replace 235. I'm guessing it's 266 or 267? Anyone seen it on the radio, or on the road? I drove by and saw it outside one night and it's not been there the last time I went by. Of course I didn't get a picture of it that first day I saw it.

Harry pointed out I screwed up. 235 is the foam truck not the service truck. It is the service truck which was 231 that is being replaced.

Harry they just got 2 new chief vehicles, but isn't there a gap of 2 between those and the last known units?

Andrew for gaps I have 252 and 253. 254 is Investigator Van, 255 Salvage truck, 256 and 257 unknown, 258 Car 5 and 259 Car 3. Voice radio check on 256 on Thursday.

There is now a second K9 vehicle which I haven't logged and may be in that area. It is a purple unmarked van with fleet license plate sticker.

255 is actually the logistics van. It's a Mercedes Sprinter. Sometimes when 823 is down it gets stolen for Salvage. 243 was the logistics truck, but they seem to have removed the canopy that was on the back and then 255 showed up.

256 is the new service truck of you don't have that. . They also replaced the spill containment trailer which is 942. Likely no radios attached to that though.

Yes I do have 256. 242 is out most days but I don't hear it transmit. Today it was used as Salvage truck but it may have been put in if 256 was on another call. Seems there were two large calls today.

Station 29?

Recently Fire programmed up 4 new portables for Pump 29. Is that going to be Lewis Estates? If so will we see it based at 23 or 19 till the new station is ready?

New Edmonton Pumps

There are about 8 new Edmonton Fire Pumps on the air numbered 478 to 485 or on AFRRCS 4220478 to 4220485. 478 is a Training Pump, 481 is Pump 2 and 485 Pump 1. These are new radio id's but I don't know if it's eight new rigs or just new AFRRCS radios to replace older EDACS ones.

The new AFRRCS radios will allow the first Pump on scene to flip a switch and become a mobile repeater. The portables would then transmit Simplex to and from the Pump but the signal would be repeated on the proper talk group in use. If a second Pump arrives and flips the switch the two signals would screw up the communication.

Do you know what brand of mobile repeater they are using?

Both Futurecom and Pyramid have logic that both detects and prevents multiple repeaters from actively transmitting at the same time.

If Pump 1 shows up and activates its mobile repeater, then Pump 2 does the same, Pump 1's repeater detects the new repeater and puts its self in stand-by, if Pump 3 shows up and activates its mobile repeater, Pump 2's repeater will go into stand-by along with Pump 1 and so on as more repeaters show up and get activated(all repeaters must be on the same frequency). as the Pumps shut off thier repeaters, the remaining ones detect this and start activating in reverse order. If one leaves out of order, the remaining repeaters detect the change and the newest remaining takes over.

Futurecom repeaters are transparent to the network, so that when a portable user transmits, its RID is seen by radios receiving it, and not the mobile RID attached to the repeater.

The Futurecom DVRS really is the Cadillac in the mobile repeater industry.

At this point I only know that they are using Motorola radios but can check. Interesting about how those units you describe take care of a number of issues including the radio Id problem and multiple repeaters turned on.

Yes they do. They also support end to end encryption. You can turn on as many mobile repeaters as you want and as long as they can hear each other, they will not conflict with each other, and will also ensure one is active at all times.

If they are using Motorola radios, then they are likely using Futurecom DVRS or the VRX1000.

Only Motorola sells the Futurecom mobile repeaters, and they only interface to the XTL 2500/5000 mobiles, or the APX4500/5500/6500/7500/8500.

Futurecom gear is pretty damn slick. It's in use down here.

Excuse my mild amusement that Edmonton has gone to Moto equipment...

It sure is slick. Makes every other mobile repeater look welfare in comparison.

I believe EPS is staying with Harris. I know AEMA chose Harris for their AFRRCS gear.
