• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just recently updated my CPS software to version 12.0 Build 642 on windows 10 and I was trying to update firmware. I connected the OEM cable to USB port and I could hear the computer making the sound that it was connected. I went to settings, connected devices and shows "USB Serial Device (COM4)". Shouldn't that say Motorola radio or something like that? From the software I tried to read the radio but kept getting error #1687 Unable to detect applicable devices(s) Check to see if compatible programming cable is used. It use to work! Should I have updated the "firmware" first before updating the CPS software? Should I un-install the software and go back to older version 11dot5_build621?

Problem solved

My friend sent me Motorola radio driver and I installed it. It took care of the problem. I am now able to read and write to radio via the programming cable!

I have this issue sometimes in the field , my labtop will not read / write any turbo mobiles! I can go to another radio same model , and everything and it works! I've yet to figure out the cause could be something with the radio. also there is some issues with 12.0 as far as writing it and not being able to TX with the radio. motorola suggests using 11.5 for now again , they said 12.1 will be released in January to fix the issues with 12.0. If you have a MOL account there is a service bulletin out for it.

Bulletin

Thank you for the post. Yes I am familiar with the bulletin even though I do not have an account. The bulletin was sent to me from a acquaintance overhearing a conversation about the build 642. I am thinking about getting an account soon. Merry Christmas!

Uninstall CPS 15.5 and revert to an earlier version. Try 13.5 first. Once you can read the radio with CPS, update the radio to the latest version. Then reinstall CPS15.5 and you should be able to read/write the radio normally.

Yes, this sounds stupid but this is what Motorola instructed me to do. The reason is architecture changes in CPS won't read the Gen I radios if the firmware is too old. Yes, they broke it, and no one can tell me if this will be fixed or not.

The problem is that R01.12.17 is the latest firmware for that radio (XPR6550). I think there is something else wrong with that radio.
