ESS-11 (Assigned to ESU Headquarters).
ESS-11 is not a patrol squad but a vehicle manned by trainers and support staff assigned to ESU headquarters at Floyd Bennett Field and can respond to nearby incidents or as back-up to other Emergency Service Squads when required.

What exactly is ESU?

Not to take away from the OP's question, but I'm thinking of this... I've seen Central Police Services freqs (CPS) in the DB for various areas and was wondering... what are their use?

ESU is a squad in the NYPD or any other PD. ESU Stands for Emergency Service Unit. In the NYPD they can respond to just about anything from a EDP to a person having a hear attack, bank robbery and so on. Where I live there are two agencies their ESU is basically just like a S.W.A.T.

NYPD ESU is like an expanded SWAT team, but so much more. A big difference is, ESU is your job, you are not "on call" like a SWAT team in a smaller city where they pull in the SWAT members for a call. ESU is full time and works full tours (shifts):
