The last two days Event 9 has been active with Iron and Washington county traffic. I am picking it up off SL Simo. Sounds like some type of Traffic enforcement operation with The UHP through St. George on I-15 and SR-9 as well as Iron County UHP and Iron County SO. This morning I even heard "Arizona 16 10-41". Lots of traffic stops and vehicle impounds. This could be a great opportunity for someone running trunker to get some of the Southern Utah RID's. Sounds like all comms are being dispatched out of the Cedar dispatch center.

Usually Spring Break in St. George is over Easter weekend, at least it has been then when i've been down for the car show in Hurricane is the same weekend. It's possible that the UCAN techs are down there starting up some of those new sites around Washington County and needed to patch traffic from an active channel to test the system.
From what I have heard it sounds like they patched the UHP Virgin channel (155.625 in WnCo) due to the AZ callsigns (they share a dispatch with UT in the Virgin Gorge) and the mile markers along that stretch of I-15.
Hopefully Kf7yn can phish for some new CCs down there on his return.

How amazing this 800 MHz trunked system is. When you can sit here in Salt Lake and clearly hear the traffic from that far away (When the system allows it). Several years ago, there was a plane down near Strawberry Reservoir. Satellites kept picking up the ELT, but ground searchers were unable to locate it. As long as Life Flight was in the area, I could hear the traffic. They got low on fuel and left.
The next time I heard traffic was when the state helo came on scene. It all has to do with affiliation.
The state helo used FLIR to locate the downed AC.

The first time I found out how robust this trunked system under UCAN is was back in August of 2007 when I copied Logan PD from my home in Kearns. I found it remarkable because I was (I still am, too) using the OEM telescopic antenna that came with my BC780XLT. I even started a thread about it which turned into quite a group discussion. I believe that was the first time I ever encountered the word "affiliation."

Since then I have heard the UCAN Engineers doing tests in various parts of the state from where a reasonable person would never before expect to be hearing radio communications, especially with the simple equipment I have, considering the distance involved and the terrain in between.

I'm sure that as the system is improved and expanded, we are going to see some very surprising things come up.

The 800 MHz band including cell phones, operates in the upper half of the old television UHF channels.
There was even an article in a ham magazine once about taking an old UHF TV tuner and converting it into a receiver for the 800 band. Knowing that, I bought a six-foot, UHF TV Yagi antenna.
I thought I would need it to home in on weak signals. I tried it a couple times here in Kearns.
I got overload. I thought maybe I could point it at Weber County and it would exclude everything else.
Not so, with a non-trunking 800 scanner, I got everything surrounding me. Well, at least I can use it for digital tv now.
