There will be a link opening up in the next couple weeks on scanamerica.us with TRAVIS COUNTY (Austin Tx). If there is any certain agencies or talkgroups or freq that people want to be added to the link or the scanner please send a message. Currently the link will be scanning ALL tlk groups for APD, AFD, EMS, TCSO, and some DPS. So please leave a comment and let me know what you think or what tlk group you want or dont want or what freq you want or what agency you want. Thank You and Happy Scanning!!!

PS- I will update on radioreference when the link is up and running. The link will also have alpha tags.

I think this is a good idea but including all the talkgroups you are talking about would be way too many in my opinion. The system is so busy that if there is a good conversation and someone doesn't respond in time, it will take a long time to get back to that talkgroup.

How many or which sites do you plan on monitoring?

As for APD/AFD: a lot of the TGRPs can be excluded. I don't imagine that people would want to hear the "Training" or "Talk" TGRPs of APD, or AFD "Training." Also, no one wants to hear patient reports from ATCEMS in to the hospitals so those TGRPs can be eliminated.

As for TCSO: Why try and listen to so much? TCSO is very busy themselves.

My opinion. Limit it to APD/AFD/Texas DPS. ATCEMS wouldn't be too bad.

Also, some of the more used InterOp TGRPs could be nice to listen to for big events- you'll need to confirm with someone who is a regular listener as to which ones are used the most for big, downtown events.

Yeah, dump the training and Non Directed talk and General use stuff. Dispatch, Patrol, NCIC, Tactical/SWAT, Criminal, Narc, Fireground and the like is what you want. Ain't like the listener can stop and hold on an active incident so you want the scanner to re-scan quickly.

I'd suggest DPS Capitol PD, Rangers, Executive Protection. And then what ever Good Federal stuff is available. Austin is the Capitol so there Has to be some good stuff to hear. Heck, even Intel security might be nice to listen to.

Hope your not going to load up Streets and Public works or any Amateur stuff. If you have thought about it, Ham holds will never let the scanner find scan again.

Well the plan is to have 4 or 5 links for the Travis County area. One for APD, One for AFD/EMS, One for TCSO related, One for DPS, and One for just for Scanner related items. I am still new to the Austin area so I don't understand the whole break down of how the channels break down yet and what channels are good channels to listen to and what channels are a waste to listen to and so on and the use. As far as right now until I can get a better understanding of what channels to scan it will include APD, AFD/EMS, DPS(maybe) and maybe TCSO i just don't want to make the link to hard to listen to. I don't understand for example APD, what is STEP, RAT, CIB ect ---- AFD/EMS what is MedCom and other channels like that. So if anyone can maybe explain a little more about the channel break down or what are some good channels to listen to that would be awsome. I will also be provding alpha tags so that the listeners will know what they are listening to. SO any help is very welcomed. Thank You and Happy Scanning!!

Just my personal preference but DPS is a must. No agency can pull over people with a criminal history like DPS can.

CIB stands for "Criminal Investigative Branch/Bureau." Those might be interesting but again, look at the shear size of the system and think- if I was listening (out of my house in downtown Austin), what would I want to hear and what would be extra that would bog my list down (slow scanning)?

STEP=Special Traffic Enforcement Patrol: Motor jock's, Speed Enforcement, School zone speed enforcement.
MED COM: Generally EMS to HOSPITAL Patient reports. Can sometimes be the actual EMS dispatch.
RAT=unclear, could be Rapid Assault Team, Response Assistance Team ....

Yes, DPS and ANY Federal Law Enforcement Agency on the system (unless encrypted) is a MUST! TABC if they have a channel is good. (Texas Alcoholic beverage Commission) TABC agents are DPS Troopers who got sick of pulling motorists over. (that's a joke)

SWAT/ERT/TAC all pretty much the same. Tactical & Surveillance channels are good but may not be active for amounts of time.

Fire ground or Fire Op's Channels are good for Working Structure fires. But Fire Training, Drill tower nopper's, leave them outa scan! Some Events channels are good, depending on the event. Not sure everyone wants to hear a bicycle marathon on Sunday morning.

Amateur radio repeaters will get you no where unless in the event of a Storm net or Emergency Weather Situation. But general day to day ham traffic? We have too many 2 meter repeaters in Texas already!

Military Air Traffic will score you points - But might also score you a visit from a DOJ agent named Saied!

So true!

Last week, on the way to Louisiana, while traveling through Chambers Co., I listened to a dispatcher read a record for someone a trooper had pulled over...it took 10 solid minutes to read the "rap sheet" on this colorful individual. I am guessing that the dispatcher had to take a break after that, because the very next series of communications had a different voice.

I can't knock it down like everyone else is. I'm listening to Dallas PD/Fire as I type this, and it's interesting as all get out! After Abilene went "none of the public's business", I welcome a site like this with open ears.

Well the way its looking so far is that there will be 2 links one for APD, AFD/EMS, DPS than second one for TCSO and other related scanner items. The second link will not provide alpha tags or be on at all times due to me only having two scanners. The second link will be up when my prsonnal scanner is not in use. This the current list for the APD link minus a few or couple tlk groups used by CIB, OCU, and Narc. Those will be added later.

Please comment on here i am setting this up for everyone so everyones input is very welcomed, to help make this scanner link good and not to hard to listen to. Thank You and Happy Scanning!!!

The feed is now up on scanamerica.us. The link will be up and running around 01march2009 give or take a few days. There will also be some testing on the new link to make sure everything works. Can someone please comment on here to let me know if the scan list for APD , AFD EMS , DPS is ok or if anything needs to be changed. Thank You and Happy Scanning!!!

Travis County, Texas Live Police, Fire, and EMS Scanners

Also does anyone have the 10codes or codes used by APD , AFD/EMS. I am trying to type up a spreadsheet for the Travis County link. I typed up a spreadsheet for Calhoun County link. Please check out the Calhoun County link to let me know if a spreadsheet like that will work for the Travis County Link. The spreadsheet can be viewed by going to Calhoun County, Texas Live Police, Fire, and EMS Scanners than click the lower case italic blue " i ".

I was listening in the other night while eating downtown and damn...

I had 7 talkgroups active on one list and it was non-stop. I had the Frank, Henry, & David Dispatch TGRPS and their street response TGRPS as well as the Austin DPS TGRP. At 9pm it was all non-stop without a break. Only having those 7 TGRPs in I had a problem keeping track of which conversation was which. I really think that this feed is going to try to do too much at once. Besides, with Mardi Gras events happening in town I bet this feed would be doing overtime.

Not trying to bust anyone's balls, but this system is pretty damn busy...

Hey Army Scanner,

Thanks for setting this up. I can't speak to APD or AFD, but ATCEMS doesn't use 10 codes at all. The only code word that is used on a somewhat consistent basis is code 4. For example: "Medic 10 is everyone code 4?" In reference to making sure that all the EMS/Parmedic providers on scene are safe and not in in danger. Code 4 is also part of the response needed if the emergency button is hit on the radio. For example: "This is personnel Jones, I'm code 4." is the standard response back. If communications gets a different response back like" Yeah, everyone is fine here", that's a big red flag that their in trouble on scene and can't say it.

Hopefully that helps,

Vanilla Jedi

The link was active for a little bit last night. But is off line again. The link will be up and running full time in about a week give or take a few days. What about the scan list that i wrote out is that one ok, or should some tlk grps be changed. yeah i understand its a busy system, but its Austin. Like i said i am going to break down each link into sub links, but for right know there will only be two links. The second link will only run at certain times. As for as big events i understand that i wont be able to stop on tlk grp evertime something big is happening but i will try to. That is why it is important for everyones input on how i set up this link and what channels to scan. If there other people in this area that would be willing to set up a link also that would be great. But like i said any and all input is more than welcomed.

Here is my view on the EMS side about channels to have. I'm part of the ATCEMS system as a paid/volunteer EMT-B and I listen to it quite frequently.

TCEMS CONTRL EMS Dispatch
TCEMS MCOM N EMS MedCom North
TCEMS MCOM C EMS MedCom Central
TCEMS MCOM S EMS Medcom South
TCEMS MCOM W EMS MedCom West

TCEMS CMD1 EMS Command 1 -Don't need, never heard it used in 4 years....
TCEMS CMD2 EMS Command 2 -Don't need, never heard it used in 4 years....
TCEMS CMD3 EMS Command 3 -Don't need, never heard it used in 4 years....
TCEMS CMD4 EMS Command 4 -Don't need, never heard it used in 4 years....

TCEMS EVENT1 EMS Event 1 -You can add, but not much going on here, for big events , EMS uses a interop channel to talk with all the other agencies.
TCEMS EVENT2 EMS Event 2 -Same as above
TCEMS EVENT3 EMS Event 3- Same as above
TCEMS EVENT4 EMS Event 4- Same as above

TCEMS EMERG EMS Emergency Emergency ID Activation

These channels below are used for major EMS calls, pin-in's, Hazmat, Structure fire support, large wrecks, etc. About 90% percent of the time these channels below are patched with an AFD blue channel. Normally, EMS TAC 1 will be patched to AFD Blue-1 and so forth for better scene managment.

TCEMS MCOM 1 EMS Medcom Tactical 1 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 2 EMS Medcom Tactical 2 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 3 EMS Medcom Tactical 3 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 4 EMS Medcom Tactical 4 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 5 EMS Medcom Tactical 5 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 6 EMS Medcom Tactical 6 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 7 EMS Medcom Tactical 7 EMS-Tac
TCEMS MCOM 8 EMS Medcom Tactical 8 EMS-Tac

I would suggest adding some hospitals, but it would just keep the channel even busier and you would miss alot of the call traffic. That's my 2 cents on the EMS side of things in Travis county.

Re: Austin FD & Travis County Fire: nearly every working incident is put on Blue 1. You just about don't need to listen to the Locution talkgroups (the robot dispatcher channels) to catch stuff, just park it on Blue 1 and you're mostly good. As for second, third, fourth and so on working incidents, I don't know where they go.. never been there long enough to catch that many at once. I want to say Blue 8 is the second working incident channel, but don't hold me to that.

It goes every other channel for Blue channel use.

If they have more than once major event at the same time it goes as follows.

First incident=Blue-1
Second incident=Blue 3
Third incident=Blue 5
and so on...

The even channels are used for logistics and other things as needed for that event. For example Blue-1 , Blue 2 is also available for logistic use or whatever is needed. With one exception, all Major Aiport incidents for AFD are on Blue 8.

In a really large scale event, I have seen up to 4 blue channels being used.

I don't know how much the Inter-op channels are used in Austin yet. But you could cut those out (Temporary lock-out) unless a Specific Incident took place then un-lock them and throw them back into the scan list. But for day to day scanning, cutting them loose might free up the re-scan time. What radio are you scanning with?

I had the Grayson/Fannin feed on Scan America until I experienced a minor Heart Attack and had a stint placed in there. Anyways, I set up Scan list 20 on the 106 and used a V-Scanner file strictly for Scan America. I separated my Inter-op channels and moved them to the Bottom of the list, so I could then easily lock out or un-lock not as used or less important frequencies.

I also wrote a file Specifically for Weekends that was much different than weekdays.and would jump between them. Many Channels not used as heavily during the week light up on weekends, so to avoid listeners hearing the less crucial stuff I swapped files in accordance. If I was listening at the console while an event un-folded, I did not hesitate to Hold Active for the incident. (Shootings are Great, some Major fires and All Chases.)

Anyways dude, look forward to hearing your feed - Best of luck to you on it. That's a Tough crowd on Scan America. Hope you have a successful feed.
