Nice article. Of course the HT pictured is a marine radio, but to the average radio-illiterate reader they wouldn't know the difference between amateur vs. marine vs. CB vs. FRS/GMRS.

I didn’t realize the U.S. amateur population had crossed the 1 million mark yet. I hope it’s true but I think it’s actually closer to 800,000.

How many are actually OTA?
Some are SK, some are tanking a break, etc.

I don't know where the writer got that number, but it's wrong.

That said, the number of hams in the U.S. is not the topic of this thread.
