Not sure if it was just good band conditions today, or what, but I usually lose the DPS system as I pass through Weatherford (especially dropping behind the ridge on the west side of town) and today it was good and strong all the way to Clinton then south to Hobart.
I didn't pay a whole lot of attention going out this morning, but coming back this afternoon I found a rather eclectic collection of talkgroups on the system I was listening to. Didn't think to check which frequencies I was hearing until after I hit Weatherford, at that point it was all Geary. Can't believe I'd be hearing Geary from Hobart, likelier to be Cooperton. If so, their coverage areas meshed well with very little loss of signal even in the low spots.
But Geary was transmitting a bunch (everything?) from the Lawton area - Lawton PD/FD, Comanche County PD/FD - as well as Troop A rural (not too surprising), Capitol patrol (more surprising) and Turner 1 (really surprising). Needless to say, it was quite a busy node even while carrying absolutely nothing from its own area!
Maybe they were doing some work and just turned on a bunch of things to see how it was going? Dunno how that works... Seemed like an odd assortment of groups to have enabled.
Sure made the drive less boring, that was nice! Gotta go back tomorrow - be interesting to see which site I'm actually hearing in Hobart, and perhaps just when they switch...
