Exercise Will Evaluate Region’s Emergency Mobile Command Capabilities
Towson, Md. (April 6, 2010) – Baltimore County emergency responders and other public safety personnel, along with those from neighboring jurisdictions, will practice how jointly to command an emergency scene using mobile command resources at an exercise this Saturday in Millersville.
The exercise is scheduled Saturday, April 10, 8 a.m., at the Anne Arundel County Logistics Center, 8311 Grover Road, Millersville, 21108. Participating jurisdictions include Baltimore County, Baltimore City, the City of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Carroll County, Harford County and Howard County.
Over the past few years, these jurisdictions have used federal Homeland Security money to purchase a total of nine state-of-the-art mobile command & communications vehicles. (Baltimore County’s mobile command post cost about $400,000.)
Saturday’s exercise will evaluate the capabilities of these vehicles and their crews. The exercise is particularly aimed at testing interoperability during an emergency. It also will evaluate various field operations capabilities including use of radio and computer equipment; helicopter video downlinks; and the ability to provide communications, command support and other technical functions at a major incident.
This exercise is supported by a Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) grant for interoperable emergency communications. The Baltimore Urban Area Work Group – a panel of public safety and other government officials that administers federal Homeland Security funds for the Baltimore region – secured the grant.
