A little excitement about 3 blocks from my house in west OKC this morning about 0630. I was in my home office on the computer when there was a muffled boom and the windows rattled.
Shortly afterwards, I heard approaching sirens from fire station 33 about 1.5 miles away. I turned on the scanner to hear the arriving companies start reporting in on a fully involved house with a partial collapse of the structure. The first company in reported additional explosions and the en-route chief told them to stay out of the house unless absolutely necessary.
Ended up with about 5 companies on site along with EMSA for smoke inhalation by one of the occupants. Fire was fought totally defensively due to full involvement. From first sirens to when I could no longer observe smoke from my home office window was less than 20 minutes.
I saw the noon news report on KOCO-5 that said propane tanks stored in the garage were the source of the explosion and fire. Video showed that the fire also burned their cars in the driveway and melted the siding on the house behind them. Damage to the involved house - $200k and the neighbor's siding - $15k.
Definitely an interesting morning in the neighborhood with the scanner. The explosion, however, did not wake up my wife or daughter or even disturb the dog that has to join us in bed during thunderstorms and the Fourth of July.
