What speakers have you guys used and recommend, I would like it to be compact. I will be using it for scanners and CB's.

Would you recommend the radio shacks mini extension speaker?

Thanks

I have one of the little tiny extension speakers

and a slightly larger one.

The bigger one is alright...but neither is a "WOW" kind of product. The little one is nice because it's pretty small, but the audio isn't all that great (from what I remember...I took it our of the truck about a year ago).

I just ordered a Kenwood SP-50B which is supposed to be awesome...but fairly expensive.

I firmly recommend any of the regular Motorola speakers that are black or white in color. They can be easily found on e-bay or at many Ham Radio swaps. Likewise, there are also amplified versions, which are much louder, but require a DC power source to operate.

Both of the Radio Shack speakers have audio response that is tailored for voice. They clip the high, and low frequencies, thus enhancing the mid range. The results is somewhat of a tiny sound, but very clear.

I'm using the larger one (Cat #21-549) on my new ICOM PCR-1500 communications receiver, and I've been very satisfied with it.

Hi Macomb and all,

Right, communications speakers regardless of make are tailored for voice so they project well and you don't hear unwanted garbage. Too much bass and you hear the PL tone (few receivers filter it out) and to much trebel and it's tinny and piercing leading to ear bleed.

I can't see why one would need an amplified speaker, if your receiver puts out the usual 2.5W any good speaker will blast your ears off. It's a matter of impedance and overall efficiency, a 4 ohm speaker draws more current than an 8 ohm one so it reaches a higher output level at a lower volume setting. A speaker made for voice requires less drive than hi-fi to produce the same SPL and the highest efficiency is achieved with a horn. They tend to sound "horny" but they're darn loud so if you blew your ears listening to loud music a pair of PA horns makes a decent headset. (;->)

Tech note;
Those 4" square "Motorola Slim Line" speakers are not made by Motorola at all. They're supplied with quite a few commercial radios, each with that particular manufacturer's name and logo on them. I have seen them unbranded as well so ignore the name, they all come from the same sweat shop somewhere in the Far East.

To Hear..... Or Not To Hear........

I need an ext speaker to use in the patrol vehicle as I always have the drivers window open. I went to R.S. and plugged in one of those mini speakers and it wasn't as loud or clear as the speaker in my PRO-96. An amp. speaker is not practical in the patrol vehicle due to the ext wiring.

Guess I will have to keep looking............

Here is a battery operated, amplified external speaker.

I use an amplified speaker by GE. I have it downstairs and it is connected to my pro 2096 which is upstairs I used some rg-6 coax for speaker wire. I power it with a wallwart and can keep the volume on the scanner low and still have control of it downstairs.

I ordered the speaker from here but I see they don't offer it anymore. Some other good stuff here though.

If you have a free cigerette lighter socket you could put a plug on the speaker power cord.

Hoffy,
In the patrol vehocle I can't have a lot of wires floating around and the ign and engine noise thru the cig cord requires a filter. Just isn't worth it.

Have you tried this speaker yourself???

I honestly have not. However, I read some comments sometime back from someone who had, and he said it was very loud!

Hi again

Mouse, if a patrol vehicle is equipped with a Motorola radio it's equipeed with a Motorola speaker. Are you following me? No matter the make or model of the radio and speaker, if mounted properly and unobstructed you'll have NO problem hearing it even with siren blaring and the windows down.

Patrol vehicle? That raises the question, why does it concern you when it should have been installed properly in the radio shop? What's wrong with this pictue?

This is my own private scanner for my personal use so the radio shop will not have anything to do with it.

I've had to do this as well. The Dept. doesn't pay for a scanner, the radio shop doesn't mount it. It comes and goes with me. I'm to the point I just put my handheld scanners on a bag on the passenger seat. Can't hear them over the siren or even just a freeway speeds really, but it's the best I could do on the cheap.

If you have to use a handheld, you'll have to use an amplified speaker. The only other way to do this is to have one of the little FM broadcasters that transmits to the car stereo (if it's still installed). This however, is still wires and power. The headphone output on the -96 isn't designed for using an unamplified speaker.

Somebody above is using the "Jump to Conclusions" mat.

Mic,

I bought 3 speakers off of ebay that really do sound great with my ham radios. Model SH2P4. Foreign made no name brands that I paid $6 each. Thet even have their own eham review. They are small, black w/mounting bracket and come with a 6 foot cord. They really do sound great. I use them everyday. I don't know if the guy I bought them from has anymore, but it's worth a look on ebay.
Check out the reviews at eham, some guys say that they sound better than the $100 comms. speakers they have.
Good Luck.

I would be very careful about using a scanner in a patrol vehicle! I have ruined two scanners (BC250 and a SC200) by using them in a patrol vehicle. My patrol vehicle has a 100 watt Motorola VHF-hi radio, and aparently the transmission power fried the front ends of both scanners. The scanners are at Uniden right now being repaired ($50 a piece). So if all of the sudden you seem to have lost sensitivity on your scanner, you will know what happened.

I wish there was some kind of solution for this!

Hi Mouse and all,

"This is my own private scanner for my personal use so the radio shop will not have anything to do with it."
Well then, trot on down to the radio shop, scrounge a speaker and mount it yourself.

MB, his problem is a poor speaker, not a blown front end so the pair seems to be compatible.
