External Antenna Extend portable range?

Just wondering how well an external car antenna could extend the range of a portable radio.

I am talking about a vhf portable but I also have a scanner.

Go for it absolutely. It will make all the difference in the world. Both transmitting and receiving. Do it yesterday.
