External antenna on a Pro 97 question

I have a Pro 97 that has been great for my area. However, I would like to put up an external antenna to get a little extra range. Knowing the front end of the Pro 97 will it be a big hassle going back and forth from an external antenna back to a duck. I'm almost certain that I will have to set the attenuator to some of the local freq's. Is it a hassle always going back and forth? Am I better off getting a base unit and setting up things once?

I hooked a scanntenna up to my pro 97 right on the patio, had the antenna up about 20 ft, no problems at all, never had to use the antennuator
