Hello Everyone. Has anyone had any success with an external speaker or some type of lapel mic type speaker? I've tried a couple with no real success. Low audio, bassy sound, etc. Thanks! Stay safe. Henry

Do the audio boost for those hard to hear freqs. I do mine via Win500 software. Makes a huge difference. Don't need an external speaker. Have used an adapter to transmit over FM radio in the vehicle. Unless you do the wire from the ground on the bnc connector to the ground on the earphone jack, a non-amplified speaker won't work.

Can you describe exactly how you "do the wire from the ground" procedure, so I can attempt it?

For in home use (available AC power) get a set of amplified PC speakers. I bought a set for $13 at Kmart.

If you are using your scanner in the field, just get a set of iPod earphones. I use a set when I go to the Cleveland Airshow. They fit in my ears and are noise cancelling. I can hear clearly with planes (jets) flying over head.

FYI, the jack on the GRE PSR 500 is an earphone jack, not a speaker jack. So an unamplified external speaker just doesn't work. One other note, the jack is Mono, but Stereo earphones work, you get sound from both ears.

I use the bnc ground to the earphone jack ground wire with a non-amplified speaker it sounds louder. I remove the wire it sounds very low. I also have the audio boost on in all frequencies. It does not matter if the speaker is amplified or non-amplified you will hear a difference with the ground wire install much louder.

I believe that the earphone jack is attenuated. I can't remember exactly how it's set up, but it may be that by grounding your headphone wire to the bnc ground you're bypassing that attenuation.

Indeed the headphone jack on most GRE hand-held scanners are for headphones and not speakers. Additionally, most are wired so that you can connect a stereo or mono headphone or earbud and have both (or the one mono) sides work.

All you need is a single external speaker, not two (such for stereo). An external unamplified speaker CAN work, but it needs to be a relatively high impedance (something not common). In other words, you will have better luck with a single 45 ohm speaker than you will with an 8 or 4 ohm speaker.

One solution is to connect the ground from the power jack (the minus) or antenna shield to the "ground" side of the speaker. Connect the other side of the speaker to the tip connection from the headphone jack.

The other is an amplified speaker because it has a high input impedance. A PC speaker is a great choice to use.

Use a paper clip from the antenna to the speaker plug you will great loud sound .
How I do it is put the paper clip under the antenna or around the metal part and around the speaker plug and plug it in . it will ground it so it works

This is what use in my work truck hooked up to a black motorola no amplified speaker and it is loud, I made a short piece of wire with ends on it to fit over the bnc and over the 1/8" male connector..
