Sometimes these storms enhance VHF and UHF propagation. There has been auroral activity the last two nights which can bring some strange conditions... Listen to your AM radio at night during such auroral events and you will find signals coming in from "strange" areas while normally strong nighttime AM stations might be totally missing. VHF is often enhanced on the ham bands (6 meters [50 mHz] in particular).
Earlier this evening, I was able to talk to buddies in Ohio and Northern Indiana on 3.87 mHz, but signals were somewhat weaker than usual. Also talked to a friend on 14.314 in Florida. He was strong, but with lots of QSB (fading).
So...what I am saying, just because the sun blows up like it just did, does not mean ALL radio will suffer. I like to look for "propagational opportunities" during such events. By the way, the K-index reached 9...Which is the highest possible level of disturbance. It will probably affect radio propagation for a few days before gradually returning to normal.
