If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Trying to program a few F70's, getting an ILLEGAL DATA message.

Have the OPC 966U with CSF70, Radio reads fine but at the end of the read process I get an ILLEGAL DATA message and Check Com ports.

What's the fix for this? Why is it happening?

Thanks

the software is Revision 1.2 the Clone Cable USB driver is 1.1 and I will have to get the radio over here later to see what the firmware version is. But I see where your going with this, if the Radio version is older I see no problem with it working, but newer then I see the problem. Thanks, I can work with this.

LOL Do the Doo and Not the Dough.

I got them programed, I found the New software and even with Firmware 2.9. The radio's are done and it didn't cost me any doo or dough. Thanks for the offer fire, didn't get back to the post quick enough to see your offer. but that project is done now anyways.

Take Care

I'm sure you'll like your F70D. At the shop (we're a dealer for Icom, Kenwood, and Motorola) we've got some F70Ds set up for demonstration purposes. Our demo kit consists of VHF F70Ds, M/A-Com (I guess it's Harris this week...) P7170IPs, and Motorola Astro Sabers and XTS5000s, all configured on several
channels with and without talkgroups, and call alert and selective calling. It's a very good demo that shows
full brand-to-brand interoperability in P25 CAI mode as well as analog modes.

The F70s perform as well as any others. Their RX audio quality is far superior to the M/A-Com radios
and every bit as good as the Motorolas. Their transmit audio quality is better than any of them. Better
than the M/A-Com, better than the Astro Saber, better than the XTS.

Well done, Icom!

It's amazing that these aren't the best selling VHF and UHF P25 portables on the market. By rights they
should be. But unfortunately it's not the quality of the radio that sells, it's the ability of the salesdroid to
convince the customer that "my way is the only way".

The radio industry would be perfect if all buying decisions were made by technical staff instead of
beancounters and purchasing agents who are so non-technically-oriented that they'll call a tow truck
for a burned-out headlight.

Sorry...

Sorry to resurrect a REALLY old thread. Having the same error. If it weren't for Google and this awesome forum I'd be at a loss to figure out even where to start.

Software v1.2 - Some old software the County had for some older radios.

New radios were just purchased for our ambulance unit. Unfortunately, the person in charge of getting the new software and cables to program these at the County was fired (and arrested for embezzlement). Tried searching his old office at the County for any updated software but no luck. I'm fairly versed at programming Icom amateur radios with their CS software but the LMR radios have a lot more features and settings.

Radio label under battery: IC-F70DS
When reading the Radio Info in v1.2 software:
SERIAL NO.: it is present
Activate Code: also present
Application: Analog P25
Model: LMR (P25 Conventional); IC-F70 Series; Simple Front
Revision: 3.0
Sum: $60C4
Comment: (blank)
Option: P25 Unit(Rev:2.6)

I have been able to clone TO the radio with v1.2 set to Protable LMR (P25 Conventional) and it seems to work OK, although the 2-Tone paging test I did tonight did not respond as expected. It worked on one channel and flashed the programmed message, but did not repeat the PiRo/R beep as I thought I had set correctly and no bell icon appeared. On another channel I had a second radio set to, it did not respond to receiving the 2-Tone at all.

Does programming the radio using v1.2 software cause some of the features to not work correctly?

What are my options? Contact Icom and purchase updated software (v2.2 it sounds like)?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

F70 DT squelch problem

Is it possible to set a squelch level separately for each channel? I'm new to programming the F70DT so if my question doesn't make sense I apologize. The radio works fine on channels with CTCSS but in channels where that is off I get a lot of hiss. On other radios I had a knob to chenge my squelch threshold. Can that be put on one of the programmable buttons?

Icom Squelch Setting by channel

In Common/Set Mode is the main squelch setting. Try 100~125. Every radio and setup takes a bit of patient adjustment. Whatever works is right.

In the Common/Common window, all the way at the bottom is an entry for SQL Tight Offset. The default is 255 (stone deaf). Try 20 or 30. Again, whatever works is right.

In the memory window, there is a column marked SQL Tight. Turn it on for CS channels that are noisy.

Do the math after that. For example If the radio default squelch is 150 and the offset is 50, the channels with SQL Tight enabled will operate at 200.

Right now, the present firmware only allows for those two settings.

Icom Home Company Engineers- take note! Vertex does it better.

Jeatock,

Thank you very much for this information. I played around with my radios to try to make them quiet, but didn't know what the "SQL Tight" function was for. I just tried it on my F-70DT and F-80DT and it worked great!

Just click com port on the nav bar and select normal speed, I think you are using high speed.
In win7 if you use Hi speed Com it will happen like that.
