BOULDER COUNTY - The sheriff's office says a climber had to be airlifted to St. Anthony Central in Denver after falling approximately 100 feet Sunday afternoon.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office says the climber's partner, 25-year-old Avery McGill of Boulder, was lowering him, when he thought he saw a rock falling. McGill took cover. Then he realized that it wasn't a rock that was falling, but his friend, 45-year-old Lon Abbott of Boulder.

McGill tried to grab the rope to stop Abbott's fall but he was not able to do so. Abbott fell approximately 100 feet. Medical personnel at the scene told 9NEWS Abbott was believed to be in serious condition.

Jeff Brunkow, a deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, told 9NEWS McGill burned his hands because he grabbed a rope to try to stop Abbott's fall. McGill refused medical attention.
