So I’ve been thinking about programming the San Antonio FBI into my scanner but I don’t quite understand what all the channels do and what traffic is going to be on there. Also there are these “simplex” frequencies that I also don’t know the meaning of, help and advice is appreciated.

Once I got to hear 3 days worth of unencrypted traffic here in Orlando on the old VHF DES system because they were unable to OTAR somebody in the group. Lots of MDC tones back and forth, while tailing some lone woman down at the attractions.

You will hear very little traffic that's not encrypted. If you have a spare scanner that does P25 I'd put them in just in case, but I wouldn't waste time scanning them in my primary scanner.

For some of us, that type of stuff is what is in our primary scanner--local fire/police/etc. is only to fill the garps.

Also what type of stuff would I hear on the United States secret service
Program the frequencies and find out yourself.
What other people hear or don't hear in other parts of the country may not apply where you are.

Back when I lived in the DFW area it was still analog and clear. The Dallas Field office repeater was dead almost all the time. Occasionally a few times a year I would hear boring administative type stuff and rarely what appeared to be training exercises or possibly surveillance.

Federal comms used to be in the clear more often in Macomb County, MI. up until around 2021 :sneaky: where they for some reason found the need to encrypt just about everything 100% of the time. Fugitive Apprehension and DEA was pretty active in the Detroit, MI area for many years.

The last FBI comms I heard was over 10 years ago, before they went completely encrypted (before digital). The interesting part was that the dispatcher did an all call for the units to call in their mileage and the last time and amount they bought fuel for their vehicles.

Depends - remember the USSS is not the Presidential Protections - but YMMV as to ENC
Only you can confirm ENC vs CLR in your reception area
I guess you mean that Presidential Protection Division is only one part of the USSS.

Maybe they stop chasing the bad guy when so many "credits" are used,, like in THX1138...

Will I hear anything on customs and border patrol and border patrol
Like they’ve all said, you never know until you plug them in and listen. I thought I wouldn’t hear anything from Border Patrol in January when I started focusing on the Federal Band, but I’ve found plenty to listen to in the clear, even and especially on simplex Tac channels.
