After reviewing and updating my list of federal frequencies, I've realized that I have never heard any FBI activity on their UHF (406-420) designated channels in the last 35 years and I've traveled all over the USA.
Has anybody ever heard any activity on those channels ?
Thanks

As "imonitorit" indicates, only as a Link Frequency [where Microwave may not have worked]
and those are dwindling, altho a few are still active in New England :)

Other than that, the only other locations that "might" have UHF are HQ in DC, NCIC/NICS in Clarksburg WV and Quantico
but those are based on speculation, other postings here and wild guessing :)

Up until maybe 5yrs ago I was a common occurrence in NW Indiana for me to hear DEA on 418.750. 418.625 and 418.950 in the clear and surveillance type trafic. I am about 40 miles from the Chicago Il area.

Still Common in many areas for UHF DEA, however the OP was asking about a different Agency

I have only ever confirmed the FBI UHF frequencies for links. I have always assumed that the FBI had in their radio cache some UHF handhelds, possibly for HRT or SOG use, but have never confirmed it. And often times the radios that "appear" to be UHF because of the antenna size are actually using stubby VHF antennas. There are several models of VHF antennas for the XTS and APX radios that look exactly like a UHF or 700/800 MHz stubby antenna.

Back in the 80's I never heard anything on UHF from the FBI but the 167.XXX VHF channels were open and could be heard. I also think the FEDs now use a lot of cell phones when not in the car or even in the car. My guess is radio traffic would be used on major take-downs with local LE's for coordination.

2 years ago I went to the FBI office here on Long Island in Melville to get a fingerprint form and in the office I noticed what looked like a centracom elite console but couldnt make out the channel designations. I will have to plug in the frequencies and listen for any traffic. When I was leaving didn't notice any antennas on top of the building so not sure where their remote transmitter may be.

I strongly think that Government agencies such as FBI, CIA, etc, would use encrypted two way radio communications. They could also be using VOX based encrypted cell phones. Scanner people will never hear LE type traffic.

ecps92 & dlwtrunked. Thanks for the nonconstructive criticism. I noticed in both of your replies a lack of information supporting your criticism of my post. Enough chest beating.

I think they are saying your statement was and is not 100% accurate. I'm guessing that you are meant to say Federal Government rather then government (lot of state and local traffic isn't encrypted) and lot of federal traffic is in fact now encrypted but currently not all of it.

No chest thumping, but thanks, it has been awhile since I was accused of that.
And there was no criticism

YYMV = Your Mileage May Vary, this indicates/points out that your experience in actually monitoring maybe entirely different from what a vast majority of us who travel have experienced. And, even the famous Great White Whale [forget the month/year of Monitoring Times] had some CLR traffic and that was likely a mobile TRS from Langley :)

We now return to active monitoring of Federal Agencies in your local area, might be time to close the thread as the Topic is UHF FBI
which has been answered

I was not trying to be a problem or criticize but rather your observations were not in agreement with mine. But I do protect my clearance capababilty so do not want to give detail on this. I will say that I reacted as at the very time of posting that I was listening to and in the clear 3 letter agency that others have also reported. And another 3 letter agency is also being heard on occasion in my area.
