WASHINGTON--The FBI is pressing Internet service providers to record which Web sites customers visit
and retain those logs for two years, a requirement that law enforcement believes could help it in
investigations of child pornography and other serious crimes.

FBI Director Robert Mueller supports storing Internet users' "origin and destination information,"
a bureau attorney said at a federal task force meeting on Thursday.

As far back as a 2006 speech, Mueller had called for data retention on the part of Internet providers,
and emphasized the point two years later when explicitly asking Congress to enact a law making it
mandatory. But it had not been clear before that the FBI was asking companies to begin to keep logs of
what Web sites are visited, which few if any currently do.

Has anyone noticed the whole FBI- "Robert Mueller" SPAM content being sent out at random to everyone on the internet? They want our providers to drop the dime on users, but fail to squash the spam being sent quoting their director? What a crock!

What more do they want? They are have their "Carnivore" software running invading people's privacy and yet to have done nothing to spammers yet. They had to drop "Carnivore" due to uproar of privacy by the people, but NSA using a system called "Narus", which is currently in use.

This sounds more like Big Brother wants to know everything you do and soon no one will have any rights or privacy.

This is one of those stories that allows the extreme privacy nuts to cry foul, yet the ATM, the super market, your SSN, credit cards and countless other facets of one's life are not given much thought. Unless of course you want to go down the Ted Kaczynski path.

Assume everything is categorized and easy referenced (as they say in the X-Files) and play the game the smart way. VPNs and many other tools or haxxs come to mind. Thankfully, most criminal kiddie porn scum bags are stupid. Ask them what a swap file is and the answer you will receive will be something along the lines of, " geee, I don't know."

Why doesn't someone write script that runs in the background and does nothing but connect to subversive and pornographic web sites.

The data would never go anywhere but it should make the FBI Agents job a lot more fun if you ever come under suspicion. ;)

All these security agencies already read your information anyway, so this is nothing new. Over here, the EU brought in regulations which require the exacted same data retention in 2005.

it is true to a certain extent. they can only read your emails after a proper Warrant has been filed. IM's can be seen anyways, and yes they do log everything that comes across your connection.

"Can" does not equal "Do" when it comes to reading emails and IM's

As for logging, another "can", and a small "do", but no ISP is going to waste server space storing much more then high level statistics that help them optimize their systems.

If there forced into it they have to. They have do choice. And if and when it does happen. Our Internet rates will go up. We will have no choice.

Likely true, but the comments were about what they do now.

That's the beauty of unsecured wireless internet and the additional anonymity it can provide provided you're just visiting sites and not providing any personal information to the sites.

Either that or try something like anonymouse.com

I prefer the first option.

For those of you who are so naïve to think the government is not in complete control of the Internet, I will remind you that this whole notion of sharing information over nationwide computer networks started out as a project from the Department of Defense... no matter what Al Gore would like you to believe! What makes you think they have given up control of it?

But in reality, "Big Brother" really doesn't care about what the average guy on the street is doing. I communicate with a number of people in Russian and Ukrainian so I am probably higher on some sort of "watch list" than most of the people here. And yet, I still sleep very well at night!

Хорошие товарищи удачи!
