• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

The FCC has opened the process that can lead to a change of the rules that would expand the 700 MHz frequencies for public safety or public service. There are four blocks of frequencies set aside originally as guard bands for thepublic safety agencies. Nextel bought these guard bands at auction. As part of re-banding Nextel surrendered the four blocks that consist of 6 MHz of frequencies.

These frequencies are 746 to 747, 762 to 764, 776 to 777 and 792 to 794 MHz. These are outside the 700 frequencies in the Uniden 396 and 996 which cover 764 to 775.9875 along with 794.000 to 823.000.

There has been many meetings on this issue during the past two years. GRE may have been very smart to hold off on producing a new scanner until rebanding has been finalized.

There is a seperate petition filed by Cyren for an additional 30 MHz of 700 of spectrum that is not included in the above. Verizon has filed for half of the original frequencies that Uniden has to build a public/private partnership nationwide radio system.

700 MHz is a long way from being settled. Here is the NPRM at the FCC for the guard band
