I am looking for information from the FCC. I have my personal radio that I use for my fire department and first aid squad. Do I need a letter from the person on the FCC license of every channel I have to transmit on it? What are the regulations. What other regs should I know about? Thanks

If you are looking for information from the FCC, then go to their website at FCC.gov!

You might get accurate information from a hobby bulletin board or you might not. Is it worth the risk?

You NEED permission from each "licensee".

Your best proof would be a letter from each licensee, signed by the same person who signs the license, or an authorized representative of the licensee.

They must make sure the the total number of units they allow remains under the unit count on the license.

They should also keep a copy of the letter to you with their license.

Not to be redundant with many other posts, but the equipment must also be FCC type accepted/type approved for the service it is used on, and programmed to comply with the license.

The above is merely a suggestion, and is not to be taken as legal advice.

I suggest the first thing you do is talk to your chief officer and see what he or she has to say. I would think you're not going to get any other agency's approval without something on your agency's letterhead. An issue you are certain to face is getting authorized to broadcast under another license with a radio the licensee has no control over. It's one of the reasons why most states have mutual aid channels. You don't have to get permission from every agency you might ever need to talk to and their dispatchers aren't going to wonder who you are if you come up on their frequency.

Mutual aid channels are only "Mutual Aid" channels BECAUSE there have been written agreements between the licensees.

They are not "free to use" without an appropriate license.

Are you permitted to use your own radio on the freq? If your chief or radio manager hasnt said you can then you should not use it. In some areas only agency purchased radio's may be used. In my area the chief just has to know your using it to be considered ok.

Just a note: Your chief may not know the legal requirements of the license.
