I believe that the Signal 65-2 stated that at 0100 hours tonight (1 am Tue, in about 5 hours), the Computer Assist Dispatch System (CADS) will be offline. Units will be dispatched via Voice Alarm and Radio. Could make for some interesting listening.

When the FDNY first got computers, someone in the training program was asked how it was working with them.

His answer was very prophetic, and very true:

"It made a good Dispatcher better, and a bad dispatcher worse."

And that was over 40 years ago!

Seems like the CADS System went down at 0108 hours. Radio traffic has been busier than what you would usually hear the time of night. I did not hear any plan for the time it would be coming back online. Maybe they are finally replacing the old Radio Shack Model 3's. LOL.

My recollection is that is was first field tested in Brooklyn late 1970's and the city was fully online around 1980. My brain is a little shakey on the dates--- around those times. I edited a hand-out about it for then Asst Comm. Gregory but have been unable to find that documentation so many years later.

Manhattan just announced CADS is back up again. I would imagine the other boroughs will be following shortly. Let's see.

A new CAD system will go online in the very near future. When the CAD system goes down, in-firehouse alerting is unavailable so all runs will be announced over the Voice Alarm in the firehouses. As a scanner listener, this will likely only be noticeable for units going 10-84 (on scene) for runs they are on as the MDT on the trucks may not be online so they have to announce their arrivals over the air.
