How do the fdny dispatchers know what trucks to assign to a box?

Do the dispatchers have a list of what trucks to respond to what areas and now many to assign per box?

If so, is there a legal public copy of this list?

We now have a program that builds the box assignments. The barb program uses mapping and builds the alarm card. They don't change much, once built only changes are when a unit moves for renovations or something.

The cards are not public but you could always try to foil them.

The reason I ask is because I live in Harlem, but I listen to fdny a majority of the time, and I listen how they assign and to whom and it's like some of the dispatchers know off the top of their head what trucks go where and how much apparatus is needed. I think it's amazing. Occasionally I'll scan the TAC channels if their close by as well.

I'd like to build an offline box locator when I find the time. This way I can just type the box number and the location will come up.

Thanks for the info.

We used a similar system in Rochester, but it was built into the CAD. Any time a unit was out of service or relocated, the CAD would automatically select the next available unit or units based on location and type of incident. We used similar logic but different mapping for police dispatch. It's all pretty much the same anywhere that a CAD is used with minor variations.

This is what an alarm card looked like in 1992 (the last time a set was printed):

Each horizontal line is 1 alarm. The CADS picks the nearest available unit from the list. The alarm assignment for every box in the city is predetermined and unchanging (except, as Tom said, for short term closures.) It's just that simple.
