I'm programming a radio, and want to keep the channels down. Does anybody know what PD freq's are used for the precincts that also have a lot fires in them? For instance, in Brooklyn, if a lot of fire's happen the 73'd Pct, the PD freq would be 476.9875. Thanks for the help.

Maybe they don't see the need for a TRS. I've been scanning since around 1976-77 and they've been using these frequencies since before then. Why change what works?

If they were to get a TRS, it would cost tens of millions of dollars just for Manhattan alone because of all the high-rises. VHF signals generaly carry further than 800MhZ. They would need a lot of sites to get penetration into all of the buildings they would be going into. Also, they would need in-tower sites like they have in some high-rises now. 800MhZ simplex wouldn't have made it to the 60th floor of the World Trade Center towers. I live just north of Philadelphia, and if the wheather's good, I can pick up most of the boroughs. So naturally I don't want them going to a TRS either.

Trunking is not the be-all-end-all answer for a radio system.

There are lots of good reasons to use trunking and lots of good reasons not to.

800MhZ simplex wouldn't have made it to the 60th floor of the World Trade Center towers.

Neither did the VHF simplex they were using at the time. Read chapter nine of the 9/11 report.

I'm surprised none of you has mentioned the 800mhz trunked system that NYC*EMS used to operate on. It wasn't that long ago.... In the late 80's, there was a big controversy about the "evil 800mhz signals and the possible brain cancer that might result from use of portable radios". Sound familiar? :twisted:

Follow-up...........this was an extraordinary incident, never before seen and hopefully never again. Every agency was unprepared for such an event and that's why there have been some changes in the Incident Command System. But enough with 9/11, I've buried it because I lived it.

I apologize, apparently I struck a sensitive nerve. I never stated or intended to imply that the radios caused the deaths. Obviously the blame is solely that of the islamic nut jobs who believe they're going to heaven for commiting these atrocities.

What I was pointing out was that the radios and frequencies in use on 9/11 by the FDNY (Old Saber 1's operating on VHF simplex) were not adequate, when the above poster mistakenly implied that they were. That's all I meant to say and nothing more.

On an interesting side note, the digital UHF radios which were used briefly in March of 2001 were even worse than the ones they were slated to replace. For those that want to learn more on the topic, go read Radio Silence: FDNY. It's truly an eye opener.
