There has been alot of activity on the federal freqs, atf and fbi lately. My scanner keeps locking on them but no audio. There is some unusuall noices but nothing audible. Could it be encrypted or?? and Ideas??

While I've not ever heard it myself, that sounds like the standard description of what you hear when somebody is using DES encryption. And given that those are federal freqs, I imagine that's exactly what you are hearing. Just a guess.

Tulsa Area DES Encryption

There is alot of the Federal Freguencies in the Tulsa area that are using DES encryption. Sometimes the traffic starts off on a frequency with a PL tone, after a few words in, the users switch to DES encryption. The rest of the traffic is just noise.

Example: 170.800

The new Oklahoma City uber-system is supposed to interface to everything in the metro, including Federal stuff. perhaps it is the radio techs testing the interconnection?
