Fellas,

I am new to alll this but very intrested in making this a hobby. I was wondering what scanner would be good to use when trying to listen in on DEA,FBI,etc etc conversations. I bought a radio shack PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner. It seems like it wont pick up those other frequencies..Please let me know..Thanks fellas

DEA and FBI typically use encrypted systems, so no scanner will work.
To the contrary - I find that the local DEA TGs are almost always in the clear. It's the local outfits (e.g., Metro Drug Task Force) that encrypt more often than not.

The OP has an analog scanner. PRO-164 is incapable of hearing secret squirrel stuff on DTRS or ESK systems.

I was only commenting on the "no scanner will work" comment with regard to the DEA. The OP is indeed in some deep trouble with an analog scanner in this part of the world. The PRO164 is incapable of hearing about 95% of LEO traffic in this state.

Some of the agencies that the OP is interested in are in the clear using analog. Go to the Wiki menu at the top of this page, pull it down and select "Federal Monitoring" and punch some of those frequencies into your scanner and you'll be surprised what you can hear. Most are right - they are largely going P25 and encrypted, but there is plenty of analog out there to keep you interested! Have fun! :)
